Now that a petition for Nevada’s secession from the United States is under way—with more than 10,000 signatures—we need to start preparing. Things we’ll need:
A good attorney A requirement for Nevada’s statehood back in 1864 was that it could not secede from the union.
Maps A chunk of state land is owned by the federal government, and they’re not likely to give it to us, so we’ll need something to detail the new borders between us and such areas as the Nevada Test Site, Death Valley National Park, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and Lake Mead National Recreation Area (including Hoover Dam).
More signatures More than 2.7 million people call Nevada home. We’re probably going to need to get a few of them on board with this idea.
Water When we’re no longer part of America, the U.S. might not be so quick to let us dip into the Colorado River water supply.
