Sumpin’ great
I like humor from my beer brewers. If they’re not having any fun, how am I supposed to have fun drinking their product? In that vein, I decided to try Lagunitas’ summer wheat beer, Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale this week. The name alone makes you smile, if only because you find yourself saying it in your head. (I should note I would not have the nerve to say that phrase out loud in public. It’s a cool phrase, yes, but ... Read more...

Add a little Russian to your life
It had been a Thanksgiving to remember. For the first time in my eight years as a Las Vegan, instead of visiting relatives in a different state or slaving over a hot stove all day with an endless supply of dishes to clean, my wife, Annette, and I decided to stay in Vegas for the holidays and enjoy a Thanskgiving buffet with friends. It turned out to be a splendid choice. For starters, my buddy, Adam, had racked up so ... Read more...

Freakin’ Frog giving it up for charity
The Freakin’ Frog, one of Las Vegas’ finest bars and the place to go if you’re a whiskey fanatic, will be offering a portion of its proceeds to the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada for the next three days, part of its “Drink Up For Downs” program. From November 21-23, the Frog will offer tastings of various marks of Macallan whiskey for $200. That includes 10-year, 12-year, 15-year, 17-year, 18-year and 25-year, and all structured tastings will be held ... Read more...

Great beer and pink johns: Enjoying a beer fest in Lake Las Vegas
It wasn’t just charity that had the hundreds of folks at Lake Las Vegas feeling all warm inside on November 12. It was also the dozens of craft beers freely flowing all over the Village for Brew’s Best Spring Fest, a fundraiser for New Vista. The event started at 1 p.m., and was in full swing by the time I arrived at 1:30 p.m. I have been to Lake Las Vegas several times, and have never seen it this crazy. ... Read more...

It may be called ‘No. 2’, but Deschutes’ latest is a clear No. 1
Bend, Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery is a constant source of wonder to me. I’m a big fan of their basic products, especially Inversion IPA, Black Butte Porter and Jubelale. Those three alone would keep me an adherent for years to come, but Deschutes is never content. They’re constantly finding new and exciting ways of keeping beer interesting. Their latest experiment, the Conflux Series, is something I hope other breweries consider in the coming years. Realizing beer fanatics aren’t limited to just ... Read more...

Enjoying a beach and a buzz
Two things about myself that I am certain of: 1) I really like beer and 2) I really like to travel. So naturally, when I find myself engaging in the latter, I usually try to include the former. My road trips aren’t just road trips, they’re brewery tours. Most breweries or brewpubs usually include a restaurant, so it’s easy to work them in with your on-the-road meals (I highly recommend the duck tacos at Stone in Escondido, by the way). ... The Lion’s Tail cocktail at Embers is a spicy classic reimagined for summer
Refreshing, peppery and adventurous; those are the words that instantly come to mind upon first sip of the Lion’s Tail ($9) at Embers Grille & Spirits. This vintage cocktail, which ...
