A beer fit for a King—of Westeros
By Ken Miller
Hey, here's an idea for a drinking game featuring Ommegang's new Game of Thrones-inspired beer: Every time Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) takes a drink, you have to take a drink.
Everyone who knows me knows I’m pretty passionate about two things: Beer and the HBO show Game of Thrones. So it just about blew my mind when I heard that a beer company is capitalizing on the popularity of that hit series by releasing a variety of Thrones-inspired brews.
It’s all part of a partnership between Brewery Ommegang and HBO, and it starts with the premiere of season 3 this March. The first beer in the series is called Iron Throne, and it’s a blonde ale. If you’re a fan of the series, you’re probably smiling right about now, because the current holder of the Iron Throne is a member of the Lannister family, a clan marked by … what else? … blonde hair.
No word on what future beers are planned in the Ommegang series, but I’d like to suggest a few:
Dark ale This gets imbibed in copious amounts in the George R.R. Martin books. Maybe a dark IPA, perhaps?
Mead Yeah, not much call in modern times for this brew consisting primarily of honey and water, but what better show than Thrones to bring it back?
Cider It just seems flat-out crazy that cider won’t be on the Thrones menu eventually. It practically flows like water in this universe.
Look for Iron Throne around mid- to late-March. It’ll be available in 750ml bottles for a suggested retail price of $8.50. If you’re like me, you’re probably already budgeting for a bottle—or two.
