Weekend Hangover: Red Rock’s revamped Lucky Bar is wide open

When the center-of-the-casino Lucky Bar was sealed off for renovations a few months back, we got scared. Years ago, we used to hang out at the similar Drop Bar at Green Valley Ranch Resort, which originally had a fun space-retro vibe. That lounge was renovated into a weird, cartoon-gothic, purple-and-paisley thing. It feels like going for a drink at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. We didn’t like it. So we were worried Red Rock Resort’s Lucky Bar would take a similarly bizarre ... Read more...

The year’s best bourbon? Ken Miller says yes

Call this a premature move if you must, but I’m already calling it for Bourbon of the Year: Evan Williams Single Barrel’s 2003 vintage. For those of you who up until now have only ever had Evan Williams’ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, take special note: The Single Barrel is a whole new animal. Now in its 18th bottling, EWSB is a 10-year bourbon released once a year, and while I’ve only been along for the ride since the 2001 version, ... Read more...

A beer fit for a King—of Westeros

Everyone who knows me knows I’m pretty passionate about two things: Beer and the HBO show Game of Thrones. So it just about blew my mind when I heard that a beer company is capitalizing on the popularity of that hit series by releasing a variety of Thrones-inspired brews. It’s all part of a partnership between Brewery Ommegang and HBO, and it starts with the premiere of season 3 this March. The first beer in the series is called Iron ... Read more...

The worst tasting booze in the world, and why it’s awesome

The viral video that “promotes” Jeppson’s Malört compares its taste to grapefruit, earwax and Hitler. Google “malort face” and you’ll find a series of Flickrs and photo streams documenting the painful expressions of those sampling this abhorrent alcoholic beverage for the first time. The A.V. Club website’s taste test notes “It’s exactly like eating a tire fire.” Lots of things have been described as so bad, it’s good. Malört is so bad, it’s evil. Jeppson’s Malört is a Chicago thing. ... In defense of alcohol gift sets

Somehow alcohol gift sets are grouped with gift cards and cash in the impersonal, cop-out gift category. Who doesn’t like cash? Or alcohol for that matter. Even if it’s not as personalized as a photo collage from that Spring break trip to Key West, nothing says “I love you” like a bottle of your friend’s favorite booze, coupled with some cool accessories. This year, liquor brands have stepped up their game. While the standard bottle of scotch and two glasses ... Read more...

Envious no more

One of the great—and simultaneously not so great on your wallet—things about being a bourbon fan is wanting to try EVERYTHING out there. After all, as I was quick to discover, every bourbon product has its own unique characteristics. (Sometimes, even different bottlings from the same distillery can taste completely different.) So I’ve been hard at work amassing everything I can get my hands on. Expensive, hell yes, but also extremely rewarding. Except when you really want something that’s not ... Read more...

Ken Miller, meet Pappy

It’s been about two years since I got bitten by the sour mash bug. I’ve now bought literally dozens of different types of bourbon, everything from the pleasant drinkability of 80 proof stuff to the deep burn of the 150 proofs. I’m happy to say, it’s all been good. Until now, when it officially reached the level of magnificent. Early on in my bourbon travails, I became acutely aware of a product name being tossed around in chat rooms and ... Read more...

Tales and tips from a Weekly writer’s Downtown birthday barhopping

Downtown Las Vegas is my favorite place to party. And although this might be the case, I recently realized that every one of my post-21st birthdays had been spent somewhere on the Strip, perched at some table at some club. So with that in mind, my birthday partner-in-crime (aka my twin sister, Alyse) and I decided to switch it up for our 26th and planned a birthday barhopping extravaganza – to be held solely within the Downtown district. After all ... Read more...

Weekend Hangover: the comfort of Comme Ca’s bar

I think the first trip to the understated bar at Comme Ça came about because we were looking for a quiet spot in the Cosmopolitan, a booze-soaked nook where we could relax, imbibe, have a little conversation, and open the designer toy blind boxes purchased at the Kid Robot store on the second floor. Little did we know this would become a ritual; I can’t remember a time when I was at Cosmo and didn’t swing through here for a ... Read more...

Beer—it’s what’s for breakfast!

To be clear, I don’t usually drink beer first thing in the morning. My before-noon beverages tend toward the caffeinated variety, with perhaps a mimosa on Sunday. But beer? With breakfast? At least, that’s what I thought before last weekend’s Downtown Brew Festival. The Motley Brews-produced bash featured more than 40 breweries serving over 150 lagers, stouts and IPAs to a crowd of locals at the Clark County Amphitheater. And while late October would seem the perfect time to roll ... Read more...
