Put Hop Ride IPA on your shopping list

Last week, I reviewed Tenaya Creek Brewery’s Calico Brown, a pleasant enough product, but not really my cup of … beer. This week, I get the distinct pleasure of reviewing another of Tenaya Creek’s products, Hop Ride IPA. To recap, Tenaya Creek is as solid a local brewery in Las Vegas as you’re likely to find. They started out serving food along with their brews, but as time went by, they decided to focus only on beer. Good for the ... Read more...

What can brown do for you? Depends what you’re looking for

First off, let me say that Las Vegas has some fantastic local breweries. If you’re a beer lover and haven’t been out to Chicago Brewing Company, Big Dog’s or Joseph James, you are seriously missing out on some of the Valley’s bounty. Of course, if for some reason you’re just not able to make it out to any of these, fear not—much of their product is now available at your local liquor store. I recently hit the local Total Wine ... Bourbon fans, put Noah’s Mill on your Holy Grail list

I can say this with certainty: Bourbon is my drink. I’ve gone through several phases throughout the years—vodka, tequila, scotch, rye, every type of beer—and nothing gives me the repeated satisfaction of a deep, hot, sip of this particular spirit. For me, there is literally no better way to finish off a day than sitting in a leather chair and holding a tumbler of bourbon. Oh, and watching Mad Men, preferably. I really discovered this passion at a Kentucky bourbon ... Read more...

The Essential Crawl: Vegas’ most necessary bars

Champagne’s Café 3557 S. Maryland Parkway, 737-1699. If you haven’t been to Champagne’s Cafe, stop for a moment and picture what it might be. Then take that image and turn it on its head. This low-lit bar and karaoke joint is a divey dream, complete with vinyl booths, red and gold brocade wallpaper, a permanent haze and a crowd that’s split between crusty old-timers and hipster college kids. Somehow they manage to get along, taking the mic to sing karaoke ... Read more...

Drink like DJ Tiesto

Not everyone can have a cocktail named after them. Most of us drink other people’s booze—Jack Daniel’s, Johnnie Walker, Hemingway daiquiris. But most of us aren’t Tiësto. The superstar DJ, in town for his Encore residency at Surrender and Encore Beach Club, hit Society Cafe on Friday night, where they mixed up “The Tiësto” for him. Want to drink like the DJ? Stop by the restaurant, nightclub or party pool and order one of the Jäger-based cocktails for yourself. The ... Read more...

Our favorite margaritas, just in time for Cinco de Mayo

Tlaquepaque Margarita at Agave I’m a purist. A margarita is supposed to be tequila, lime, and a balancing liqueur over ice. Blending is bad in my book, but this refreshing, sweet treat at Agave in Summerlin is the only occasion for rule-breaking. Fresh lime juice is squeezed into this mixture of ripe red raspberries, Patron Citronge and Casa Noble Crystal,
a silvery-smooth blanco. ($11.95, $48/pitcher, 10820 W. Charleston Blvd., 214-3500). —Brock Radke, web & food editor. Original Margarita at Hussong’s ... Read more...

HOB gets Supernatural for Santana

Don’t know your “Oye Como Va” from your “Samba Pa Ti”? Don’t sweat it. It won’t matter once you’ve downed a couple Supernatural Margaritas, the new drink launched by House of Blues in conjunction with Santana’s new resident show at the club inside Mandalay Bay. The drink, available during all Santana performances, features your choice of Casa Noble tequilas, plus fresh lime juice and organic agave nectar. It’s served on the rocks, without salt on the rim. (They specifically told ... Read more...

In heaven at the Great Vegas Festival of Beer

Where to start on the awesomeness that was the second annual Great Vegas Festival of Beer? For four hours, Tivoli Village in Summerlin was absolutely packed to capacity, but it never felt too crowded. Every beer tent had a sizable line, but event organizers were apparently ready for the enormous crowd, as the beer flowed well into the evening. Luckily, the event was slated during the evening hours, and while the sun set, plenty of patrons could be found in ... Read more...

From basic to bubbly, go Barefoot with wine designed for everyday pleasure

Drinking champagne on a Monday feels decadent and a bit naughty. I’ve only had it on grand occasions, but Jennifer Wall says there’s something to celebrate every day. Why, she asks, should bubbly only come out to play a few times a year? Wall is the winemaker for Barefoot. You know the label—a single footprint—and you probably know the approachable flavors and price points across the brand, which offers 13 still and six sparkling wines. You may not know that ...
