Six thoughts from Brew’s Best

Six thoughts from Brew’s Best, the biannual beer festival at the Village at Lake Las Vegas: 1. Best beer I tasted: Considering the diversity of beer, this one’s going to have to be a tie. Banger Brewing’s Sandia watermelon wheat was simply delicious—light, not too sweet (watermelon puree is added in the brewing process) and a smooth, clean finish. Perfect for a summer day in the sun. Also amazing: The Sculpin IPA from San Diego’s Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits. ... Read more...

A special Rebel drink on Hyde Bellagio, provided UNLV’s Madness continues

As of today, you can actually drink Las Vegas’ own March Madness—albeit in a much tastier, more Strip-appropriate form than you’re probably imagining. Hyde Bellagio is celebrating Rebel Nation with free “Scarlet Rebel” cocktails for locals. And that’s just starting today. As long as UNLV stays in the NCAA Tournament, Nevada ID-holders can stop by for one Scarlet Rebel each day, on the house. And starting Friday, Hyde Bellagio’s chic lounge will transform into a “swanky” viewing party. Cocktail servers ... Read more...

Smashburger and a beer? Hello, throwback!

What a difference a beer makes—especially an extremely cheap one! Smashburger, which currently has five locations in the Las Vegas Valley, already has some of the city’s most delicious burgers—each burger is cooked in its own juices. But now the restaurant is upping the ante, courtesy of Pabst Blue Ribbon, Hamm’s and Olympia. Purchase any menu item (I recommend the fried egg-topped Sin City Burger), and you get add a “throwback” beer for just one dollar. I find it odd ... Read more...

Sammy Hagar teaches us to make sex in a glass

The Red Rocker is adding a new liquor line to his arsenal. Hagar was in town this past weekend to launch his new Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum at Cabo Wabo Cantina. With pal Emeril Lagasse by his side, the rock star posed for pictures and sampled cocktails featuring his new premium silver rum. The 80-proof spirit is available locally in liquor stores and bars including his own Cabo Wabo Cantina in the Miracle Mile Shops. The smooth rum is tasty ... Read more...

Chicago Brewing Company’s beer sampler rules

Let’s face it—there are a number of great brewpubs in the Las Vegas Valley. I had the opportunity to meet up with a buddy who lives in the north side of town last weekend, and we decided on Chicago Brewing Company (2201 S. Fort Apache, 254-3333), as it was an almost equal distance from both our homes. Being beer buffs, we wasted no time in ordering the beer sampler, a staple of any respectable brewpub. What a great choice that ... Read more...

Sitting down with Willett Pot Still Reserve

Awhile back, I had the privilege of a Willett whiskey tasting at Las Vegas’ very own Freakin’ Frog. In addition to a mammoth beer collection, Frog owner Adam Carmer also has the largest collection of whiskies in the city, and he told me at the time that, of all the whiskey brands available, Willett is his favorite. High praise indeed. I would have been hard-pressed to prove him wrong in the last few years, as Willett only began distributing in ... Read more...

Say hello to the Adios

When my date spilled a glass of ice water on the floor—gracefully, I should point out—Marco the busboy rushed by to mop it up. The three of us fell into a “least favorite drink” conversation. Marco’s least favorite drink: the Adios, Motherf*cker. So, obviously, I ordered one. Not knowing what was inside, I might add. In a sense, the Adios, Motherf*cker is the worst of both worlds: It looks girlie drink but tastes like rubbing alcohol. Should you want to ... Read more...

Stone strikes gold again

For New Year’s Eve, I headed over to the home of a beer-loving buddy of mine who promised me some exciting new brews to celebrate the new year. We started the night wiwth a Stone product, which, for me, is always a good sign that the rest of the day is going to be very, very good. I love Stone — it’s my absolute favorite brewery, always adventurous, always looking forward. Even more pleasant than starting my New Year’s Eve ... Read more...

When is an IPA not an IPA? When it’s Newcastle

Ask anyone; I’m a huge fan of IPAs. I love the front-loading of hops; whenever any beer company tries an IPA, I’m usually first in line. It’s just a singularly fantastic taste that seems so natural to the beer-drinking experience. So when I discovered that Newcastle had come up with its own IPA, naturally I was intrigued — although a little skeptical. After all, their other recently released beer, Werewolf, was, for me, a disappointment. To be specific, Newcastle calls ... Read more...

Feeling Lucky at the Freakin’ Frog

The Facebook message from Freakin’ Frog bartender Jack Belden was short, but sweet: “Lucky Bastard now on tap recommend you come by for a taste.” (That’s right, I’ve been to the Frog so many times, I’m now Facebook friends with Jack. I’m proud to say I was one of the first people he sent a friend request to.) For those as yet unaware, I’m a Stone fanatic. I’ve sampled just about everything they have to offer, and I always look ... Read more...
