Time traveler

By Rick Lax

Want to know what time it is in New York? Anyone got a magnifying glass?

I’ve been lusting after this watch for over a year now. I saw it at the Fossil Discount store two Decembers back. I tried it on. It was love at first sight.

For a while I tried to convince myself that I didn’t need the watch - that I’d be better off without it, that a cheaper watch would satisfy me.

Many time zones, one watch.

Many time zones, one watch.

To no avail.

Well, I’m proud to report that last week I bought the watch. Now I can sleep at night.

As you can see from the picture, it’s actually five watches in one. It’s got airport call codes next to each face (JFK, LAX, LHR, CDG, NRT), and the idea is, with this watch, you don’t have to change the hour when you get off the plane, you world jet-setter, you.

It couldn’t be less practical. First, the faces are so small that I can’t read them. I can’t tell 7 p.m. from 8 p.m., so even though I have time zones from all over, I don’t know what time it is in any of them. Second, I get the time from my iPhone, and third, I’ve pretty much forgotten how to tell time on an analog.

So, is it possible that the reason I like the watch so much is its impracticality?

Black sardony (x) and inoxydable--nice combo!
Time-what is it? Other (excepto) than real?

So glad to hear you like it, too, Cypher. To me, time is the thing that lets me know when to be at places, and I don't question it past that. But I guess a lot of people do, and say that it's a construct, but I often have trouble following those people...
