This really happened

By Rick Lax

Read 'em & weep.

The craziest thing happened to me two nights ago. But I can’t expect you to believe it. After all, if you told me this story, I wouldn’t believe it.

But it happened.

Here’s the story:

I’ve played poker my whole life, and I’ve never seen a royal flush. But two nights ago, at the Mirage, I got one. And then, forty-five minutes later, somebody else did.

Two royal flushes in one hour.

The thing that made ‘my’ royal flush particular crazy was that it wasn’t just mine; it belonged to three other people, too. You see, the ten through ace of clubs came up on the board, meaning they were the community cards (and we split the pot).

Odds of that happening: 1 out of 650,000.

Then, forty-five minutes later, the board showed the ten, jack, and king of clubs, and the player across from me turned over the ace and queen of clubs. Another royal.

Odds of that happening: 1 out of 65,000.

Odds of both happening forty-five minutes apart: not good.
