Marquee Monday mini-memoir
Industry night at Marquee—you can tell because when the deejay said, “Put your hands in the air if you make money in Vegas,” everybody did just that. The Jabbawockeez don’t mess around. When they say they’re going on at 1:00 AM, they go on at 1:00 AM. On the nose. The guy standing in front of me on the dance floor? He messes around: When the Wockeez took the stage, he (purposely) threw his empty cup and his date’s to ... Read more...

March Sign Roundup
I came home to find that sign taped to my gate. Nobody took it down for a couple of days. Presumably, because we all realized that unmanned gates provide absolutely no security protection in the first place. The sign just served as an unfriendly, depressing reminder. And here’s another sign I came across last week—this one at the gym. In case you can’t make out the marker, the sign reads: “today’s specials Bonzai $5 Special Eat Healthy complete it with ... The 80s, loved
Remember the 80s? I do—barely. Hey, I was 5. But last night I got a great 80s refresher at TAO Nightclub. I helped judge an 80s look-alike contest. Amidst a sea of Michael Jacksons, Madonnas, Chers, and Rick Jameses (Rick Jamesi?), Pee Wee Herman took third place, the Terminator took second place, and…if you want to know who took first (and $10,000)…pick up next week’s Las Vegas Weekly. Hits the stands on March 17th. Read more...

5 observations from the 2011 Nightclub & Bar Trade Show
1) The 80s are making a comeback, in the form of unbuttoned shirts and indoor sunglasses. Or maybe club owners have always dressed like this. 2) Malibu Black Rum: Not bad. But can I order it without getting laughed at? (Always been a Malibu fan, always struggled with requesting it.) 3) Everybody loves balloon animals. But don’t take my word for it; ask master balloon sculptor James Changefield. “The balloons,” James explains, “get the girls, and the girls get the ... Read more...

The Other Mafia
Playing Mafia is my #1 favorite thing to do in the world. But not that Mafia. Not Mafia Wars. Never played that game. This one is different…. It was invented at the Moscow State University’s Psychology department in the 80s, as a teaching tool. It was popularized on Latvian TV and then brought to Princeton University. Now, it’s making its way to Las Vegas. I won’t try to describe the game to you. Because it sounds confusing, un-fun, and pointless. ... Read more...

The Lion’s Tail cocktail at Embers is a spicy classic reimagined for summer
Refreshing, peppery and adventurous; those are the words that instantly come to mind upon first sip of the Lion’s Tail ($9) at Embers Grille & Spirits. This vintage cocktail, which ...
