A tendency to accumulate
My parents aren’t hoarders. I’m not saying my parents are hoarders. That’s not what I’m saying.* What I’m saying is, my parents have…tendencies. They like to accumulate stuff. I do, too. I’m not exempt from this. I hate throwing things out, and if you visit my apartment, you’ll see that for yourself. So I’m not casting the first stone. We’re all in this together, Laxes. Okay, here’s why I’m bringing this up: Last week I visited my parents’ house in ... Read more...

Ultimate embarrassment at Walmart
Yesterday I went to Walmart. I bought $200 worth of stuff, including something embarrassing. I’m not going to say what it was, but I’ll admit that it was embarrassing. And don’t try to use your imagination because you’ll get it wrong. I’m checking out, and the cashier takes the embarrassing item and runs it across the scanner. Then she puts it in a bag. Then, after scanning the next item, she goes back into the bag, removes the embarrassing item, ... Read more...

Horses and irony
Three weeks ago, I tried to take my girlfriend horseback riding at Mount Charleston. We made reservations and then we got rained out. “We’ve gone six weeks without a miss,” I was told. “But now the trails are muddy, so it wouldn’t be safe. Let’s try again one day soon.” Fair enough. I waited a week and then called back to reschedule. “I don’t think it’s going to work out,” I was told. “Why not?” “We’re closed for business.” “Permanently? ... Read more...

Finding musical middle ground
The Cold Blue Rebels don’t sound how they look. They look evil; they sound goofy. (I mean that in a good way.) But my girlfriend and I didn’t drive out to the Cheyenne Saloon to hear the CBR; we drove out to hear the Delta Bombers. Hannah is an old friend of Bombers guitarist Andrew Himmler. The Delta Bombers have been playing rockabilly music for about 5 years. They’re based in Vegas but they usually play in Los Angeles. “They’ve ... Read more...

Finding the least helpful signs in Las Vegas
Las Vegas is filled with wrong signs. I’m not talking about signs with incorrect grammar; I’m talking about signs that point tourists in the wrong direction. If you’re at Trump, on the pool/gym level, and if you want to use the restroom, there’s a sign that points you in the precisely wrong direction. The sign points right; the bathrooms are to the left. If you’re walking down the steps of the Mirage parking garage, when you hit ground level—assuming you ... Read more...

The subtle turn to evil
Every sci-fi and comic book origin movie has a scene where the bad guy first turns evil. Usually the turn is small and it grows with time. Well, I just had my turn. I spend all my time in coffee shops and bookstores—that’s where I get writing done. So I drink a lot of coffee, with cream. Sometimes, when I reach for the cream pitcher and flip it over, I learn that it’s empty. One of every 15 times, let’s ... Read more...

Names and judgments
My landlord is the nicest guy ever—there’s something you don’t hear every day. But it’s true! In my case, at least. This guy and his stepson are wonderful. Very responsive, very fair. The thing is, you’d never guess it from his name: Javad. Sounds like Jafar, the evil villain from Aladdin. Related: Last month I visited Temecula with my girlfriend. The hotel concierge recommended that we visit The Gambling Cowboy for dinner. Apparently that’s the nicest restaurant in town. But ... Read more...

Vegas kills Poe
Tim Poe blazed his way into Vegas. Then he went out with a whimper, not a bang. Tim Poe won America’s heart with his first America’s Got Talent audition. He stuttered severely, he showed a picture of himself in Afghanistan, he spoke about how he survived an Afghani grenade attack, he spoke about how he began singing as part of his recovery process, and then he sang “If Tomorrow Never Comes” by Garth Brooks. Sounded wonderful. Well, turns out that ... Read more...

The vanishing Coke trick
That’s a 1.25 liter bottle of Sprite. I used to have a 1.25 liter of Coke, too. Here’s where it went: Days ago, I hosted a party for about 10 friends. One guy I didn’t know came, too. He’d driven one of my invited friends. So, this random guy: I ran down the beverage list for him and he picked Coke. So I removed the bottle from the fridge and set it down. He twisted off the cap and started ... Read more...

Backpedaling at the Rio
I’m not okay with the way this Rio roulette wheel story played out. The backstory: Last week, poker player Jeff Romano tweeted a photo of a Rio roulette table’s electronic scoreboard. The wheel had apparently hit the number 19 seven times in a row. Romano accompanied the tweet with the words “yea roulette wheel at the Rio isn’t rigged…” The Internet went nuts. Everybody wanted to get in on the discussion of how unlikely this event was, a seemingly once-in-a-lifetime ... Read more...
