Strip Scribbles: Vegas Palace coming our way
By Robin Leach
*Celebrity chef Bobby Flay is firing up his grill with a $5-million cash infusion from General Electric's financial arm, GE Capital Solutions, to launch a chain of Bobby's Burger Palace. Bobby, who runs Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace, opened the first one yesterday in Long Island, N.Y., but says one will definitely be targeted for Vegas as soon as is possible.
Bobby's Burger Palace is "convenient casual" and features gourmet burgers, emphasizing influences from different regions of the United States (Dallas Burger, Philadelphia Burger, Miami Burger, L.A. Burger, and of course a Vegas Burger!) You can visit www.bobbysburgerpalace.com for more details. I helped bring Bobby to the Food Network when we first launched it and he wound up marrying my first talk-show sidekick, Katie Connolly, when he became our nightly guest chef before all of his top-rated shows. Expect to see a Vegas Palace here within the next 12-months!
*Like father like son. It's uncanny the similarities between my favorite basketball player and friend, Patrick Ewing, formerly with the New York Knicks and now assistant coach for the Orlando Magic, where he wound up playing after being transferred to the Seattle Supersonics. Patrick will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., in September. Now comes Patrick Jr., who followed in dad’s oversized sneakers, also studies at Georgetown University and is coached by John Thompson III, son of John Thompson, who coached the older Ewing there. The son even wears jersey No. 33 like his father. Alonzo Mourning last wore that number for Georgetown and gave permission for Ewing Jr. to take it over! It was wonderful to see them attending the NBA Summer League games here in Vegas and also enjoying themselves at the Moon nightclub in the Palms resort Fantasy Tower.
