Morning Call: A quizzical look at the Cheech & Chong show at The Comedy Festival

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong -- more popularly recognized as the legendary comedy team of Cheech & Chong -- sat for a good stoning last night during "Cheech & Chong Roasted" at the Palace Ballroom at Caesars Palace. Thanks to a frequently faulty podium made from a giant bong, a healthy scent of pot smoke hung in the air (at least, it seemed like that fragrance, if memory serves) as emcee Brad Garrett and an eclectic assemblage of celebs took shots as Cheech & Chong sparked the insults.
The lineup was comic Greg Giraldo, comic/filmmaker/TV personality/famed divorcee Tom Arnold, macho journalist Geraldo Rivera, the unflappable comic/magic team of Penn & Teller, heavily self-aware comic Ralphie May, actress and stage presence Shelby Chong (Tommy’s wife of 25 years) and a black guy wearing a “Rev. Al Sharpton” sign around his neck. This, because the actual Al Sharpton was a last-minute scratch, giving Garrett a chance to pull what he claimed was a random guy (name of Anthony Jackson) who sort of looked like Sharpton onstage.
Cheech & Chong, reunited at Caesars.
The show was remarkable for its uneven humor -- Valderrama struggled with a herky-jerky teleprompter and brought to mind a quote Johnny Carson once made about Chevy Chase (“He couldn’t ad lib a fart after a baked bean dinner.”) -- and frequent production glitches. The audio was here and there, and keeping the big bong both lit and upright proved impossible. Thus, we offer this "Cheech & Chong Roasted" quiz about the show, which will air on TBS at 10 p.m. on Nov. 30:
