Best-selling author Dominick Dunne spills his secrets

By Robin Leach

My writer friend, Steve Freiss, who is also featured here at lasvegasweekly.com, scored big with his exclusive podcast interview with famed author Dominick Dunne -- and we wanted to share some of those choice excerpts from TheStripPodcast.Com.

On his health, before falling ill at the O.J. trial: "O.J. has been a part of my life for 13 years and I wanted to be here. Once I got back into the courtroom, I got back to my old self. My life for the past year has been going to doctors. Everything’s a downer, everything’s bad news. And all of a sudden, I’ve got my old zip back that I used to have. And Griffin, Griffin Dunne the actor-director who is my son, says this turned out to be the best medicine of all. I love hanging out with the reporters, the friends I’ve made over all the years at all the trials, and so I think it’s been good for me to be here."

On meeting Steve Wynn: "I got an award from the American Academy of Achievement. They pick outstanding Americans each year and honor them and they bring 400 of the smartest high school kids in America for a weekend. And Steve Wynn, who had been a prior recipient of the award, offered the Bellagio hotel as host. And he came through one day, I’d never met him, didn’t know anything about him, and he said, "I want to find Dominick Dunne, which one’s Dominick Dunne." I got nervous and raised my hand and at the meals during that thing, the high school kids get to sit next to their mentor – if they’re interested in the business world or show biz world or the writing world, they get to meet these famous people. And he said the young lady sitting next to me, this high school girl who wanted to be a novelist, and he said, 'Honey, would you move, would you move? I want to sit next to him.'"

On John McCain: "Especially coming from someone my age, I think McCain is too old and I don't think he's in that great health."
