The bluff and bravado didn’t pay off for a bruised and battered B.J. Penn, who wound up in a hospital after his collapse in the cage against tough man Georges St. Pierre. It was a brutal beating for the Hawaiian who had boasted that he’d nail a second championship belt in UFC 94 at MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night. His rival Canadian fighter claimed victory for a second time when the referee stopped the fight after the fourth round with a TKO for medical reasons.
The hospital trip to check on a possible broken nose and head injuries meant B.J. had to miss his Studio 54 post-mortem party, while Georges celebrated at Rok Vegas in New York-New York.
UFC President Dana White celebrated with his own festivities in LAX at the Luxor. Actor Wilmer Valderrama even got on the mic there to give Dana and pal UFC commentator Joe Rogan a shout-out to the crazed crowd. That prompted a mob scene as the famed fight founders posed for photos with fans.
The Penn-St. Pierre showdown was billed as a historic and highly anticipated super fight! For those who want to know if the hottest sport on Earth is affected by the tough economic conditions, MGM officials reported a crowd of 14,885, 2,500 less than previous top sellers.
Meantime, former UFC champion Tito Ortiz, who is waiting for a double delivery any moment now from the stork with girlfriend Jenna Jameson, opened his store premiering Punishment, his new line of sports clothing. Tito held a meet and greet with fans at Hooters casino over the weekend, and our contributing photographer Erik Kabik was there for the fun and photos!
