Rich & Famous: The $750 dinner and the $50,000 champagne picnic trunk

Las Vegas has just become the first city in North America to have a Krug Champagne Room. The new hideaway here at Restaurant Guy Savoy in Caesars Palace follows only three others in London, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Not only do you get six varieties of Krug champagne, but the meal from Guy’s kitchen is truly a five-course masterpiece. The gastronomic experience is $750 per person, and the Krug Room may be booked for as few as six people or as many as 30 for the three-hour sit-down dinner.

Yes, this is lifestyles of the rich and famous, folks! Olivier Krug, the eldest of Henri Krug’s five children, gave us a warm welcome when we attended the official ribbon-cutting ceremony and christening. Olivier is a sixth-generation member of the Krug family since 1843 to helm the company. French fashion darling Coco Chanel would drink no other label, and my British wartime hero Sir Winston Churchill said his daily diet consisted of a bottle of Krug.

It is fitting that Krug chose Restaurant Guy Savoy for its fourth Krug room. In 2000, Guy was honored with the prestigious Legion of Honor, and in 2002 not only did he win his third Michelin star, but also all the chefs in France named him Chef of the Year. He opened the Caesars Palace outpost in May 2006. I have no shame: I was so knocked out by the genius of the colors of caviar, three caviars separated by a mousse of green beans and topped with zabaglione, I had the gall to ask for seconds! I’ll confess that I wanted to do the same after tasting the artichoke and black truffle soup, but by then I’d lost face with my French friends! I defy you to taste better. Even the crispy sea bass with its skin of scales was a work of art and oh so tasty!

The champagne and cuisine are extravagant and exceptional in every way, and there’s also the ultimate item for an epicurean night to never forget. Only 30 Krug picnic trunks have been made. They each took 700 hours of work and sell for $50,000. One is already here. It comes complete with four leather stools, three bottles of Krug Grande Cuvee, mother of pearl caviar spoons, a truffle grater, six Krug emblem glasses, a calfskin cigar case and a wool and cashmere throw. The door of the trunk comes off the hinges and converts into an elegant low table with dinner service and chopsticks.

Talk about champagne wishes coming true. This is creme de la creme at its very best and fit for a king, and now it’s here for you right on the Strip!
