Your weekend guide to 2009 CineVegas’ stars, parties and screenings

It’s a star-studded weekend for 2009 CineVegas with the arrival of actors James Caan and his son Scott Caan, plus Jon Voight, Willem Defoe and director Wim Wenders, who will take part in the Honoree Awards on Sunday afternoon.

There’s plenty for every movie buff with screenings, parties and Q&A sessions with the producers and directors. We’ve put it all together for you in an easy-to-read rundown (all times are subject to change). Everything is at the Palms except for tomorrow night’s screening of The Beatles Yellow Submarine at Mandalay Bay Beach.

Friday, June 12

3 p.m.: Harmony and Me with stars Kristen Tucker, Nick Offerman and director Robert Byington.

3:30 p.m.: Easier With Practice with director Kyle Patrick Alvarez.

3:45 p.m.: It Came From Kuchar with stars George and Mike Kuchar and director Jennifer Kroot.

5:30 p.m.: Sea of Darkness with director Michael Oblowitz.

6 p.m.: Patriotville with Nick Offerman and director Talmage Cooley.

8 p.m.: 500 Days of Summer with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and director Marc Webb.

8:30 p.m.: Etienne! with stars Richard Vallejos, Megan Harvey, Molly Livingston, Courtney Halverson, Rinalda Caduff, Jeremiah Turner and director Jeff Mizushima.

Parties

Rain at the Palms: Arrivals 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. with Nick Offerman, plus our friends at 702.tv celebrate their launch party at the Palms Pool as part of the CineVegas celebrations. Happy Hollows, who are featured in the Jackpot CineVegas premiere of Etienne!, will perform. … The official after-party for the CineVegas world premiere of Sea of Darkness is at Lavo in the Palazzo.

Saturday, June 13

3:30 p.m.: Asylum Seekers with stars Judith Hawkings, Pepper Binkley, Daniel Irizarry and director Rania Ajami.

5:30 p.m.: Thor at the Bus Stop with directors Jerry and Mike Thompson.

6 p.m.: Godspeed with stars Joseph Mckelheer, Cory Knauf, Courtney Halverson, Jessie Ward, Ed Lauter and director Robert Saitzyk.

6:30 p.m.: Youth Knows No Pain with director Mitch McCabe.

8 p.m.: Humpday with star Joshua Leonard.

8:30 p.m.: Mercy with stars Scott Caan, Wendy Glenn, Alexie Gilmore, James Caan, John Boyd and director Patrick Hoelck. Flamingo headliner George Wallace also is set to attend.

9 p.m.: Modus Operandi with stars Randy Russell, Danny Trejo, Michael Sottile, Barry Poltermann, Nikki Johnson and director Frankie Latina.

9:30 p.m.: Cirque du Soleil presents a special screening of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine at Mandalay Bay Beach. Moviegoers will be encouraged to float, swim and sing along to the musical city under the sea. John, Paul, George and Ringo save the good people of Pepperland after they are turned into statues by the Blue Meanies in this 1960s psychedelic-era animated classic.

Sunday, June 14

10 a.m.: Where Da Girls At with members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas; Dennis Hopper, chairman of the Creative Advisory Board; Johnny Brenden of Brenden Theatres; and Jersey Boys cast members Erich Bergen and Jeff Leibow.

4 p.m.: The Honorees Reception with Jon Voight, Willem Dafoe, George Kuchar, Mike Kuchar, Jenova Chen and Kellee Santiago. Festival executives Dennis Hopper, chairman of the Creative Advisory Board; Robin Greenspun, president; Danny Greenspun; and Trevor Groth, CineVegas artistic director. Also Johnny Brenden, Rio headline magicians Penn & Teller and TV personality Maria Menounos.

7:30 p.m.: World’s Greatest Dad with director Bobcat Goldthwait.

8 p.m. Palermo Shooting with star Dennis Hopper and director Wim Wenders.

9 p.m.: Directors George and Mike Kuchar with Vanguard Award in hand will participate in a movie Q&A.

We’ll be posting photos during the weekend, so check back often. Then on Monday, I have a special reason for reporting the closing event! It’s the presentation of a Brenden Celebrity Star in the lobby of the movie theaters there. I’m thrilled, humbled and honored to receive the star, which will join the stars of Sylvester Stallone, Hugh Hefner, Cuba Gooding Jr., Dennis Hopper and Rhonda Fleming, among others.
