Momentum is building in Las Vegas for the giant Earth Hour initiative March 28 -- and simultaneously more and more cities across the globe are signing up. Many on- and off-Strip properties have now vowed to turn off the lights and go dark at 8:30 p.m. for one hour that Saturday night.

Even our famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign on the famed Strip south of Mandalay Bay and the Four Seasons will be turned off! As of this writing, more than 850 worldwide cities have agreed to participate in the World Wildlife Fund project in the largest call to action on climate change in history.

The list continues to grow, but to date the following hotels will go dark: Arizona Charlie’s and the Stratosphere; Boyd Gaming’s properties including the Gold Coast, The Orleans, Suncoast, Sam’s Town and its downtown Eldorado, California, Fremont and Main Street hotels; the Four Seasons, the Hard Rock, Harrah’s Entertainment resorts including Bally’s, Caesars Palace, Flamingo, Harrah’s, Imperial Palace, the Paris and The Rio; Hooters, the Hilton and the Palazzo and The Venetian of the Las Vegas Sands Corp.; MGM Mirage properties include Bellagio, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York- New York, Treasure Island and the Signature; the Palms and Palms Place; the PH Towers by Westgate and big brother Planet Hollywood; the Riviera, the Sahara, Terrible’s, the Tropicana; and both the Wynn and Encore hotels from Steve Wynn.

Additionally, the Hard Rock Hotel will feature a three-course candlelight dinner in Robert De Niro’s AGO restaurant when the lights are off! The bright lights of Neon City are rarely dimmed, so this will be a historic occasion.

Vegas DeLuxe will continue to report this developing story as more businesses join the blackout.
