Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, the king of Formula 1 racing, is competing at the 13th Superkarts USA SuperNationals at The Rio through Sunday, culminating in six hours of races on the final day.
Our contributing photographer Tom Donoghue is in the pits and on the track covering “The Race of the Year” SuperNationals for Vegas DeLuxe.
“I am not sure if you realize how special these photographs are. Hardly any photographers ever are granted the access I had today,” Tom said. “You never see photos like this of Michael, by far the greatest racer the past 20 years. This is the first time in a Karting Championship in the USA for him and the first time ever on a track in Las Vegas!”
During the five days of racing, a maximum of 40 competitors drive in each of nine classes. There is one Las Vegas driver, Matt Jaskol, who in 2000 became the first driver to win five heat races in a row at the SuperNationals. Qualifying races are today, heat races are tomorrow, and the championship races are Sunday.
Vegas DeLuxe will continue to cover the SuperNationals through Sunday’s six hours of races.
