It’s a weekend when we can honor and salute our nationwide Police Departments and their four-legged partners in the fight against crime. Incredible illusionists Siegfried & Roy have supported this annual event because of their love for animals, and this weekend marks the 19th annual K-9 trials hosted by our Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
More than 50 K-9 officers and their partners from all over America will be here taking part in a series of competitions, including narcotics and bomb searches. Handlers have to display real police tactics as if they were working the mean streets using the dogs to locate suspects, drugs and explosive devices.
Round 1 kicks off tomorrow at the LVMPD Fingerprint Bureau on South Cameron from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Siegfried & Roy have long sponsored the Friends for Las Vegas Police K-9’s, which is the organization that provides assistance to the Police Department, as it doesn’t receive government funding for the animals that risk their lives protecting the officers. This is the largest benefit on the year’s calendar.
Round 2 of the competitions -- also free and open to the public -- takes place at The Orleans Arena from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Please attend and support our uniformed heroes and watch the K-9 officers and their four-legged partners compete in a series of maneuvers that displays their amazing and crucial talents. A panel of expert judges rules on the dogs’ behaviors, agility and skills, along with their partners -- and awards are presented at the end of the afternoon.
