Ladies night on DWTS produces Macy shocker, praise for Kelly

It was the night for the eight female celebrity contestants to strut their stuff on Season 9 premiere week of Dancing With the Stars, and the opening music “She’s a Lady” was totally appropriate for everybody except singer Macy Gray. Read on for her outburst!

SPOILER ALERT: Please do not read any further if you want to get the full surprise and drama of watching the West Coast tape-delayed broadcast of ABC’s top-rated Dancing With the Stars. But come back after the show to compare notes with us!

A top favorite, singer Mya danced with only two hours of sleep because of a nasty accident with glass that shattered and cut her fingertip. She was rushed to a hospital for stitches but said she was too excited to dance with bare-chested pro partner Dmitry Chaplin to notice the bandage. Kathy Ireland also wore a bandage on her leg after a cut from a cracked surfboard. She revealed that incident while rehearsing here in Las Vegas.

Our eyes were on regular Las Vegas visitor Kelly Osbourne, who danced last with partner Louis Van Amstel, but other eyes were on Macy and partner Jonathan Roberts to see how much, if anything, she brought to the contest. Behind the scenes, rumors have plagued her that she wouldn’t rehearse and regretted signing on for the show.

She certainly didn’t surprise anyone tonight -- by shocking with her behavior and language to the judges, who gave her 15 points for a “cash for clunkers” Viennese waltz! Even several of the professionals and contestants murmured that she’d been partying too much rather than rehearsing. The live East Coast transmission will obviously be edited before the broadcast here, but doubtless bloggers will have a field day deciphering exactly what possible obscenity she got out on the live show!

Will it come down to a battle between Melissa Joan Hart dancing with Mark Ballas or Debi Mazur with Maksim Chmerkovskiy or Joanna Krupa with Derek Hough? The dance picked for the ladies was either the Viennese waltz or a salsa.

Out of the gate, Debi’s salsa garnered only 16 points, followed by Melissa Joan Hart’s and Mya’s waltzes. Melissa scored 18 points. So far Mya, dressed in a baby blue dress, leads with 21, so lack of sleep and hospital stitches didn’t hurt her! Former supermodel Kathy Ireland, who is being cheered on by best friend Elizabeth Taylor, and Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin scored low with their salsas. The judges were more generous with the guys last night.

Kathy with Tony Dovolani was awarded 16 points by judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli, and Natalie picked up just a couple more with Alec Mazo at 19. The highest score of the night, and also voted the hottest performance of the night, went to Joanna Krupa dancing salsa with pro partner Derek Hough. The judges applauded them for their hotness, and they scored 24 (8 from each judge).

Kelly was right behind with not only 23 points in her Viennese waltz with Louis Van Amstel, but also praise from chief curmudgeon Len, who said “It was the best Viennese waltz of the night,” while Bruno said Kelly was a vision of grace and elegance. No wonder the camera close-up was on proud mom Sharon of America’s Got Talent when she began sobbing!

DWTS: Week 1 Men

So Kelly and Joanna are completely safe from elimination, but Macy is in real danger of being booted off -- maybe that’s what she wants anyway?

Host Tom Bergeron told the audience that director Baz Luhrmann will be a guest next week. We’ll be back here tomorrow morning adding in the relay dance votes, plus all the photos of tonight’s dance floor action. By then we may even know just what got Macy all riled up!
