As we reported yesterday, Las Vegas hotel tycoon Sheldon Adelson, alongside wife Dr. Miriam Adelson, at 3:18 p.m. yesterday Singapore time officially cut the yellow ribbon to open his $5.5 billion luxury Marina Bay Sands project in the Asian country, and here are two photos from the momentous occasion.

Yesterday was the opening of Phase 1 with nearly 1,000 hotel rooms, 300 retail stores, a convention center holding 45,000 delegates, several restaurants and, of course, the casino itself with 1,000 tables and 1,400 slot machines.

Phase 2, with another spectacular gala opening, is scheduled for June 23, with the remainder of the 2,560 suites opening and a branch of the Los Angeles nightclub Avalon with Bruce Willis and Dan Aykroyd as business partners.

Wall Street bankers are predicting that Marina Bay Sands will not only pay for itself within five years, but also revenues within 12 months will exceed all of Sheldon’s gaming empire in the U.S.
