Everybody from Las Vegas hotel executives to corporate and city leaders -- mostly ex-New Yorkers -- drove I-15 South to catch the World Series champion New York Yankees’ only trip to Anaheim, Calif., for a matchup with the L.A. Angels of Anaheim. The Yankees have championship rings from 1999, 2000 and 2009.
The Yankees players included Las Vegas favorites and regulars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, along with manager Joe Girardi, Robinson Cano, Nick Johnson, Nick Swisher, Curtis Granderson, Joba Chamberlain, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett.
Our contributing photographer and unabashed baseball fan Tom Donoghue was up close with his Nikon camera for these extraordinary shots.
Tom told me: “Ironically, it was former Angel Mark Teixeira who delivered one of the most explosive hits I’ve ever seen in all my years of covering the sport. It was the third inning when he barreled into Angels catcher Bobby Wilson to score. Unfortunately, it was the first major league start for Wilson, who suffered a concussion and an injured left ankle out of that collision.”

President Obama recently singled out Mark for setting up a scholarship fund, which he annually fully underwrites in memory of a close friend, Nick Liberatore, who was killed by a truck driver who fell asleep at the wheel of his rig and smashed into his pal’s car.
The Yankees, who first met with Obama at The White House after winning the 2009 title, trounced the Angels in a 7-1 rout.
