John Lennon’s 70th birthday will be commemorated with a national three-week tour that will include a stop here Oct. 2; his actual birthday is one week later. I’ve learned exclusively that the night out at Montelago Resort at Lake Las Vegas will feature a sneak preview of Nowhere Boy, a new movie about John’s teenage years and how he formed his first skiffle band at school that eventually became the The Beatles after Paul McCartney and George Harrison joined him.

Nowhere Boy stars Kristin Scott Thomas as John’s aunt who raised him and Aaron Johnson as the young music genius. Then a real coup for Beatles and Lennon fans: His original band The Quarrymen will be reunited for the Las Vegas visit! These were John’s schoolmates, and they still play the skiffle and early rock and roll performed by John, Paul and George.

A video clip about The Quarrymen includes memories of The Quarrymen days from John, Paul and George. I’m told the activities will be an outdoor event with a giant screen, and the band will do a Q&A with fans after performing. I’ll serve as emcee and moderator for the night and will probably recount my meetings with John and a few other Beatles tales when I worked on my first newspaper back in England in the 1960s!
