This past week, pop princess Katy Perry, who grew up in Las Vegas, became officially engaged to rowdy British comedian Russell Brand, and they are tipped to tie the knot in November. But early this morning, it was rocker Gabe Saporta from Cobra Starship who was watching out for her at Haze in Aria at MGM’s CityCenter, where she hosted her Waking Up in Vegas party.
Photographer Denise Truscello, who captured these great photos, told me this morning: “Katy put on an amazing performance. The crowd went crazy.” Our contributing photographer Scott Harrison covered Katy on the red carpet.
Even though Russell purchased the engagement ring during Christmas, he didn’t propose until Jan. 6 when they were on vacation in India. Katy’s engagement became official on Tuesday when the romantic couple took her parents to dinner in Hollywood and broke the news. Katy’s brother David also was at Il Cielo to make a congratulations toast to the twosome.
It’s been a whirlwind courtship, as Katy and Russell only met in September at the MTV Video Music Awards. Katy’s parents, who are devout Christians, welcomed Russell, a recovered sex and drug addict, into their family. The engagement party for 50 of Katy’s family and closest friends was held in a private section of the restaurant, which Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie describe as their favorite romantic hangout, decorated in candles and red roses.
Katy is in Las Vegas regularly to visit her grandmother, and she recorded her hit “Waking Up in Vegas” music video here at the Palms. She says she has found her match in rehabbed womanizer Russell.
“When I find a partner who is my teammate, I’m not going to play by any rules. I’m just going to go with my heart. Why wait?” she told Glamour in its February issue. Katy continued: “I just wrote a song that goes, ‘They say it’s hard to meet your match, gotta find my other half so we can make a perfect shape.’ ”

Katy was still in party mode early this morning at Haze, and after her performance, she kept on singing and dancing and called it quits in the predawn hours.
