First lady Michelle Obama wants the kids of America to get outdoors, enjoy our scenic treasures and play. Michelle is spearheading the administration’s effort to promote physical activity for children and families in the nation’s great outdoors.
She’ll help launch the initiative Let’s Move Outside! today here in Las Vegas at the spectacular Red Rock Canyon, and Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary Rhea Suh and Nevada Sen. Harry Reid will be on hand for the 3 p.m. ceremony.
Let’s Move Outside! is a critical component of the first lady’s broader Let’s Move! initiative that has the overall goal of curbing childhood obesity in a generation. The event highlights the opportunities for children and families to get physical exercise while also enjoying public lands, conservation areas and national parks administered by government agencies. Local children will participate in outdoor activities and receive an award at the conclusion of the program.
Before the 3 p.m. ceremony, Michelle delivers the 11:45 a.m. keynote address to the 2010 Women’s Summit at the Convention Center in Reno. The summit focuses on healthy women and communities and a healthy Earth and is hosted by Harry. President Obama visited Las Vegas in February.
If we remember anything from Memorial Day, it’s a beautiful and free country -- and the weather is gorgeous, so go outside and play. If you’ve never done the loop at Red Rock, then start walking or pedaling now. It’s too spectacular to miss.
