It’s one of the most exciting nights on the annual sports calendar, and although Las Vegas is in the middle of the hot desert, we’re the coolest place to be when the speed-skating stars of the NHL come to town next month.

Celebrities from music, stage and screen will join the hockey stars to celebrate the 2010 NHL Awards on June 23 at The Pearl in the Palms. The awards will be broadcast live in HD on Versus in the United States and on CBC in Canada.

Actor and hockey fan Mark Wahlberg is scheduled to appear onstage during the awards to help honor the nominees. Shinedown -- Barry Kerch, Brent Smith, Eric Bass and Zach Myers -- whose current platinum album The Sound of Madness features the hits “Second Chance” and “Devour,” as well as their new single "The Crow & The Butterfly,” will perform.

Grammy-nominated rapper Snoop Dogg also is set for a musical performance. An avid hockey fan, as seen on his reality TV show Snoop Dogg’s Fatherhood,” Snoop is a regular at Stanley Cup playoff games. One of the Cirque du Soleil productions will be featured, plus the cast of Jersey Boys at the Palazzo will be on hand for a performance.

A cocktail reception for the winners and performers will be held after the event at the Palms Pool & Bungalows. The show will be executive produced by Dave Broome, who masterminded the tsunami relief special with George Clooney, the Radio Music Awards on NBC and NBC’s The Biggest Loser, currently in its ninth season. Sweeping Palms Entertainment, a joint venture among Dave’s 25/7 Productions, Phil Maloof, the Maloof family and Tony Guanci, a longtime family partner -- is the production company.

Honors to be presented at the awards and still to be announced include: Art Ross Trophy (top scorer for the regular season), King Clancy Memorial Trophy presented by the U.S. Army (leadership and humanitarian contribution), Mark Messier Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone (superior leader in hockey and a contributing member of society), Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy (top goal scorer for the regular season), the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award and the Ted Lindsay Award, formerly known as the Lester B. Pearson Award, presented to the most outstanding player in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players' Association.

Kevin Miller’s hockey blog lists the 2010 NHL Awards finalists, all of whom are expected to attend the awards. Additional performers, celebrities and NHL star attendees will be announced in the coming weeks.
