A ballroom moment amid the bump and grind

“This is my town, bitch!” I think as I left hand turn into the Mirage property. A large group of tourists halt, startled, scared and likely offended, as I careen through the crosswalk they were attempting to cross. They have a clear view through my cracked windows of the bat-out-of-hell girl behind the steering wheel, night-driving glasses on, one lens missing (thankfully, the left, my stronger eye), hair and makeup decidedly un-Strip worthy. I get ready in the casino parking ... Read more...

The complete Halloween party planner

As if Las Vegans and tourists needed an excuse to shed their own indentities and become somebody else under the cover of night, Halloween has arrived. Of course, the holiday itself doesn’t actually hit until Friday, but in Vegas we celebrate with a week-long line up of parties, costume contests and concerts. Halloween is a holiday that speaks to the essence of Vegas – skin, temptation, escapism and over indulgence. The Strip nightclubs form the backbone of the festivities, and ... Read more...

Halloween hits the Strip: Where to go and what to wear

Every Halloween, you have to choose between your inner angels and demons. The ones in white want you to get creative, wear something covered up, something your parents would be proud of. The opposite school of thought is summed up by Cady in Mean Girls: “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” That makes just about every night in Vegas Halloween. You can ... Read more...

Summer’s last stand: party at the Sapphire pool

By mid-October summer in most places is nothing but a salty, sun-tanned memory, but in Vegas the heat holds on a bit longer. Today, one last pool party bids a final adieu to the oven-baked season, and this is one worth attending: no cover, drink specials, raffles and prizes and topless girls. Seriously. Picture heaven and smack yourself if it looks much different. My first time at Sapphire pool, I didn’t know it was a venue that welcomed, er, European ... Read more...

Five years of watery war for Sirens of TI

In Greek mythology, the Sirens were a trio of devious seductresses who used enchanting songs to draw sailors close to their island where they would shipwreck on the rocky coast. Pretty crafty, eh? They were beautiful and deadly, a combination that we continue to look for in our women (think Kill Bill, Sin City, Angelina Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith). In Vegas, the Sirens are a free nightly strip-side show at Treasure Island based around a mock battle of ... Read more...

Vegas: The Most Interesting Show in the World

A man tips his head back to get his dreadlocks out of the way and hoovers a sword. A seven-foot drag queen—introduced as a “bastion of beauty” – simulates sex with a random woman kidnapped from the audience. A man in a white wig strips off his pink shirt and dances around in leopard print briefs, singing Journey covers. I lower my camera to his crotch air-humping my face. The cast of The Most Interesting Show in the World has ... Read more...

Ping pong paddles mandatory, tops not so much

It’s ping pong as usual tomorrow night during the second annual Ping Pong Palooza tournament at Sapphire, except for one minor very Vegas detail. Each team of four players must include at least one female competitor, and if you don’t have a lady you can tap for the team, one will be provided for you from Sapphire’s obliging staff. They’ll also provide the paddles, tables and trophies for your game, but a top for your new pong-mate? Not so much. ... Read more...

There’s no place like Vegas”

In the bowling alley upstairs at Jillian’s, a guitar player from a local band brings me a plastic cup of beer. The Earland brothers of Vegas band Lips Like Morphine, fair-skinned despite being the sons of a famous black jazz musician, are working their way through a heady line-up of songs. “Oh, silicone parts and impure thoughts running around my head/White lines and too much time, my soul is nearly dead/There are so many things I’d like to forget/So many ... Pick your prize: paper ($$) or plastic (DD)

Paper or plastic? For years the question was a grocery store mantra, but recently it seems everyone’s stopped asking. Except Cathouse. Tonight the loungerie poses the classic inquiry to local ladies, who can work their feminine wiles and a little shameless self-promotion to compete for paper or plastic - $2,500 in cash or $4,500 in plastic surgery, performed by well-known plastic surgeon Dr. Samir Pancholi, who was recently featured in The New York Times. Here’s how the contest works: Male ... Read more...
