House versus hip-hop. Commercial versus underground. CDJs versus Serato. Selling-out versus paying the bills.
Can’t we all just get along?
Maybe, but probably not. Two Las Vegas resident DJs that most would consider on opposite sides of the industry prove not only can they draw a crowd of clubbers to the same venue on the same night, but they can also work on sweet, sweet music together in the studio. Well, maybe not sweet, but kick-ass club tracks.
DJs Ikon and Joey Mazzola regularly hold it down at mega-club Pure. While Ikon commands the main room and leans more towards spinning what he describes as a “big room sound,” the house crowd comes out to hear Mazzola keep the party going on the Terrace (or in the Red Room in the winter).
Both Ikon and Mazzola stopped by the Las Vegas Weekly studios this week to chat about their current production collaboration as well as the blurring genre lines in club music. Mazzola also jokes about being featured on notorious Web site DJFameorShame.com, and on a more serious note, a much-needed wake-up call for some DJs in the Vegas scene.
