Searchlight celebrates debut album, thanks to zombies
It all started with their love of killing zombies. Las Vegas alternative rock bank Searchlight found international recognition on the soundtrack of Resident Evil: Extinction. The band has played local gigs for more than three years (in many now-defunct venues). They’ve opened for Kiss at a biker fest and garnered MySpace fame along the way to debut album, Until the End and After, which will be available Feb. 27 at a release concert at The Farm, an all-ages venue in southwest ... Spittin’ rhymes with swagger
“You better lose yourself in the music, the moment/You own it, you better never let it go/You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow/This opportunity comes once in a lifetime” —Eminem, “Lose Yourself” Hussle is the first contestant to arrive, and he quietly leans against the purple counter plastered with pictures of women with big black hair and even bigger butts and the display cases of rhinestoned crunk cups and bling-encrusted belt buckles. His eyes hidden ... Read more...

Chewing on the new Joint
So today I toured the Hard Rock Hotel’s new Joint— set to open with a Killers show on April 17—and I can report it looks a fair bit like its predecessor. It’s a little wider, somewhat longer and, to my eyes, a lot taller. But proportionally, it appears fairly similar. Of course, I can’t really render an informed opinion on the new digs until I see—and more importantly, hear—someone actually perform there. So for now, I’ll rate the hors d’oeuvres ... Read more...

The sweet, sweet taste of Chaos (for free!)
Hardcore fans, turn off the radio. Dial down your iPod. In fact, go on a musical fast altogether. No metal, no screamo, no punks venting their angst into microphones. Of course, the best part about fasting is breaking said fast. Tomorrow night your ears can binge on Rockstar’s Taste of Chaos Tour at the House of Blues, and with a little help from Weekly you might get to feast for free. Weekly is doling out a pair of tickets to ... Read more...

Billy Joel at the MGM Grand: Seven observations
Seven observations about Billy Joel’s Valentine’s night MGM Grand Garden Arena concert: 1. Man, this guy’s got a ton of hits. He didn’t do “Captain Jack,” “Say Goodbye to Hollywood,” “The Stranger,” “Big Shot,” “Don’t Ask Me Why,” “Pressure,” “Goodnight Saigon,” “Tell Her About It,” “Uptown Girl,” “The Longest Time,” “Keeping the Faith” or “This Is the Time,” and he still managed to fill two hours with songs most everyone in the house surely knew (oddball deep-cut entries “Zanzibar” and ... Grammys score a deuce for the home team
At Sunday night’s 51st Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, one perpetually dapper Vegas son had an extra reason to shine. Make that two extra reasons, actually. After playing the Pearl at the Palms on Thursday, R&B crooner Ne-Yo headed to L.A., where he took home two Grammy’s Sunday night. The 29-year-old singer-songwriter won Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his hit single “Miss Independent,” beating out nominees Eric Benét, Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Usher. The track’s songwriting team ... Read more...

Ne-Yo brings an early Valentine’s Day to the Pearl
A little over a decade ago, an teenage boy, raised by a cocktail waitress single mother and used to relocation, would hit the Strip and Wet ‘n’ Wild on the weekends, picking up girls. Sounds ordinary. But this young man dreamed of superstar success in the music industry, of flashy cars and clothes and Hollywood and female fans. Still ordinary. But this young man, Shaffer Chimere Smith, made it. He penned a song, “Let Me Love You,” that spent nine ... Read more...

These five burned brightest
The Weekly’s Spencer Patterson has covered more than 50 shows in the Joint since 2002. His most memorable: 1. The White Stripes, September 20, 2003 The conditions were beyond oppressive—brutally loud, swelteringly hot, ridiculously crowded—yet it was all easily worth enduring. Jack was nursing a broken finger, but he still played like a demon on furlow from Hades. “The Big Three Killed My Baby” and “Black Math” were personal highlights, but everything the duo played filled the room with so ... Flight of the kiwi comic folk duo (and a Vegas landing)
Not every show has what it takes to be Entertainment Weekly’s seventh best TV show of 2007. Landing in that sweet spot, the seven, takes a certain comedic irreverence, a nonchalant confidence of purpose and message and, of course, a charismatic star. Make that two appealing stars with scraggly beards, charming foreign accents and a tendency to sing about prostitution and man hos – Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement of HBO hit Flight of the Conchords. On HBO, the comedic ... Read more...

Shedding light on Invisible Children
High school students have heart. On February 4, a special concert featuring six local bands will take place at Liberty High School (2700 Liberty Heights Ave.) to benefit the non-profit Invisible Children organization. According to student council co-advisor Amanda Zunno, Liberty’s student body president, Jasmine Jaramillo, brainstormed the benefit concert idea after being introduced to the Invisible Children documentary at a state-wide student council conference. The film sheds light on Northern Uganda’s child soldiers. Theory of Flight, Ashbury, Slow to ... Read more...

Disturbed show proves ears are entirely destructible
On Friday night, metal fans at the Pearl were treated to a triple dose of hardcore music from Skindred, Sevendust and Disturbed. I knew little about Skindred before this show but I figured since they were on a ticket with Sevendust and Disturbed, they wouldn’t be playing chamber music. Benji Webbe, lead singer of Skindred, sounds like the love child of David Draiman (Disturbed’s singer) and one of Bob Marley’s daughters. The Welsh heavy metal group blends hardcore rock with ...
