Gin [Blossoms] and Tonic anyone?
It’s a serendipitous musical collaboration almost too good to be true. Friday, June 26 will see the Gin Blossoms paired up with opening band Tonic poolside at the Hard Rock’s Friday Night Live concert series. The very ’90s evening will begin with a recently reformed Tonic, best known for their post-grunge work such as the angsty “If You Could Only See.” Continuing with the Gen X Reality Bites-era tunes, headliners the Gin Blossoms will wind through their string of lighthearted, ... Jeff Tweedy puts Wilco back on course
You probably know Wilco as that hot “alt-country” band that got into a blistering scrap with its record company back in the early part of this century. The band nearly imploded recording “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” but the theatrics were so good they made a movie about it (“I am Trying to Break Your Heart”). Spoiler: Wilco won, released the record on its own and earned much-deserved praise for producing a modern masterwork. “Yankee” hardly lived up to the “unlistenable” rumors ... Read more...

Girls Rock in Vegas
“You rock!” shout 13 female voices. Taking over three classrooms at Rose Warren Elementary School last week, three all-girl bands picked up their instruments and got to writing original music. Perhaps the next Ani DiFranco, Me’Shell Ndegéocello, Liz Phair or Cindy Blackman could be in the room. The potential is endless, the experience nil. They’re all between the ages of 9 and 17 and most have never played a single note before. “It’s been a series of small miracles,” says ... Read more...

Is Kerry Simon a new fifth member of Cheap Trick? At a press conference Thursday, the veteran rockers announced their newest venture, Sgt. Pepper Live, which will set up shop at the Las Vegas Hilton this September. During the press conference, the band explained the gig: They’ll be performing the entire Beatles’ album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band from front to back in its entirety—a feat previously thought to be impossible. So, why the heck was celebrity chef Kerry ... Read more...

Not just another love story: chatting with singer/songwriter Nadia Ali
For your live performance in Vegas at ND’s, will you have backing musicians, a DJ, or something else? I actually have a full band; I have a guitarist, a bassist, keyboards for the live show and one of the musicians actually sings backing vocals with me as well. It’s definitely a show experience, and I’ll [perform for] an hour. You’ve said you’re a hopeless romantic. How much of that translates into your lyrics? (Laughing) A lot. It’s a combination of ... Like a fine wine, Third Eye Blind ages well
Third Eye Blind guitarist Tony Fredianelli got his start here in Las Vegas before going national with the popular alt rockers in the ‘90s. Now pushing 40, the rocker hasn’t slowed down a bit. With two albums coming out in the next year and a packed touring schedule, Fredianelli keeps pace with newer Las Vegas bands like Panic at the Disco, without succumbing to the groupies. The family man helped create some of the band’s darker pop tunes wrapped up ... Read more...

With a morning concert, Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon makes it official
Age oV Reason, like most local bands, has made their rounds at venues across town, but today they find themselves on stage at a location that few, if any, have rocked before. They are playing on a tiny stage erected under the historic Welcome to Las Vegas Sign on the Strip. Mere feet away from northbound lanes, traffic takes notice. A trucker honks the horn of his 16-wheeler and pumps his fist out the window. Car after car slows down. ... Read more...

Mickey Avalon: So rich, so pretty
I rode up the escalators that led into the dark maelstrom of Prive Nightclub staring at the back of a tall, tanned girl in a tight coral dress. “He looks like Where’s Waldo!” The doorman, in a sleek suit and earpiece, commented in amusement to the girl. “He’s performing right now.” “So rich, so pretty, the best piece of ass in the whole damn city … “ I can hear Mickey Avalon singing as soon as we step off the ... Taking it up a notch with The Higher
Local rockers The Higher have been touring for six years and are about to hit the road again in support of their newest album, It’s Only Natural, to be released June 23rd . The pop-punkers have evolved into a pop rock group with heavy R&B influences and a touch of hip-hop. But don’t worry: They still rock the skinny jeans – no oversized track suits here. Tonight, you can catch the band at a 21+ show at the Rock Room ... Read more...

Viva Glasvegas: MySpace Secret Shows bring a Scotland band to the chapel
“They’re popping their cherry in a wedding chapel!” laughed Cameo McCarthy Wednesday night. A fan of Scottish band Glasvegas, McCarthy had been waiting for the band’s first Vegas performance since around 5:30 p.m. Armed with a bag of Tecates, she and other über fans shared a drink and stories outside the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. And one would have to be a super fan of Glasvegas to even know about the free show. For the MySpace Secret Shows popping ... Read more...

Under Erykah Badu’s voodoo
To say that Erykah Badu was the epicenter of a neo-soul hip hop experience Sunday night at the House of Blues would be an understatement. It wasn’t that the 38-year-old singer demanded attention – there were no antics or outlandish stunts during her nearly two-hour set – it was simply that her onstage presence was that of a true performer, undeniably magnetic in a way that makes you want to stare and keep staring. It didn’t hurt that Miss Badu ... Read more...

No Doubt announces Vegas return
There’s no doubt about it: No Doubt will return to Las Vegas this summer. After much speculation and finger-crossing, the band’s fans finally have a summer concert date to look forward to: August 7. Though the group just rocked Tiger Jam on May 16, it was unclear when Gwen Stefani and her bandmates would return (if at all) as part of the group’s summer reunion tour.
