A different kinda Crowd: Corso steps in for first ACoSA performance

Popular Las Vegas band A Crowd of Small Adventures played its first ever show with someone other than Joe Wright playing the bass on Thursday. How’s that for pressure, new member Ronald Corso?

“It’s our first show together, so probably not as tight as it will be, but I think it went pretty well,” Corso assessed after a six-song set that kicked off Neon Reverb’s opening-night Bunkhouse slate.

Corso, the producer behind National Southwestern Electronic—the local imprint responsible for recordings from A Crowd of Small Adventures, Hungry Cloud and Mother McKenzie, among others—recently joined up with holdover members Jackson Wilcox, Mike Weller and Megan Wingerter after the band parted ways with Wright.

On Thursday, Corso’s thick basslines anchored a solid if unspectacular performance, ACoSA’s first time onstage since October, particularly during a bouncy (untitled) new number and a set-capping version of “Death of an Idol.”

Still, it felt odd not seeing the exuberant Wright at stage right, harmonizing with Wilcox and prompting the audience to clap along during “Bang Bang.” “I’m mindful of the fact that Joe did MC kinda stuff—he was the hype man,” Corso said. “But that’s just not what I do. I’m a position player, here to do whatever Jack needs from me.”
