Everything is groovy

By Jeremy Adams

Beards, exotic instruments and other face-melting observations from the Aruba during the second night of Neon Reverb.

--Has OKWORD gone the way of Joaquin Phoenix? Entering the Aruba Hotel on Friday night, the local rapper was seen sporting a large, shaggy beard. “It works,” he says.

--The lead singer of American Gil and the Major Dudes sounds like Captain Beefheart, looks like John Candy, and wears a giant black suit covered with white, embroidered stars. The audience, needless to say, retreats.

--Despite mixed reviews from diners in the Hotel Aruba lobby, Easysleeves has just produced one of the best sequences of the weekend. It starts with the five-piece band performing a heavier, face-melting cover of “White Rabbit” and ends with singer Nick Caparso’s decision to bring a sitar (a sitar!) onstage. Everything is groovy.
