Bring on the fa-la-la-la-local music

With your tummy full of Thanksgiving and your wallet empty after Black Friday shopping, it’s time to turn your attention to the audible aspects of the holiday season, and we’re not talking about “ho-ho-hos” or the sounds of joyous children shredding wrapping paper. From a slowly melting companion with a corncob pipe and a button nose to a dying woman whose son desperately wants to buy her a new pair of Christmas shoes before she meets Jesus, holiday music is ... Downtown Features

Feet stomp, hands flail and torsos writhe almost immediately after The Features take stage for their performance opening for The Whigs. The Nashville quartet opens with “Whatever Gets You By/The Drawing Board.” It’s four minutes of horn-filled, indie pop-rock fun that brings out the type of manic dancing that only happens at Beauty Bar on a Friday night. It’s a party and the ‘80s-inspired male duo dancing front-row center seem prone to an epileptic fit. One of them throws his ... Read more...

Warm Coronas and other signs of success

Gauging the success of a local benefit show can be tricky. How do you know if they’re actually achieving their goal and raising money? The Weekly headed to Yayo Taco for Wednesday night’s show organized in honor of Invisible Children, an organization trying to end the longest running war in Africa and assist child soldiers. Our goal was to see if we could pin point what makes a successful fundraiser. Following are eight signs that we noticed lead to a ... Read more...

Calculating freaky factors with Monster Zero

When local surf rockers Monster Zero decided to play their CD release show on Friday the 13th at Double Down, we headed out expecting a chaotic concert in keeping with the dubious holiday. Here’s how the show stacked up: -If Friday the 13th had a theme song Monster Zero’s “Triskaidekaphobia” would be it. The word is the technical term for the fear of the number 13. PLUS 5 -The band also has a song called “Bloodbath at Disneyland,” for which ... Read more...

Late-night thoughts on Leonard Cohen

Read my full concert review in the November 19 print edition of Las Vegas Weekly. For now, a few semi-random thoughts, compiled sometime after 1 a.m. … *For those worried about Leonard Cohen’s health after his September onstage collapse: The folk-rock icon actually appears healthier at 75 than he did at 74. During his hour-long set at April’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Cohen took several rests, sitting while singing for parts of his performance. Tonight at the Colosseum ... Read more...

Everything is not wonderful with Everclear

“Please don’t tell me everything is wonderful now.” This line from the chorus of Everclear’s 2000 hit “Wonderful” pithily sums up the band’s Saturday night performance at the Hard Rock Café on the Strip. While Art Alexakis and co. played pretty much all of their popular hits from the past 15 years, everything was not wonderful. There was no hiding the fact that Alexakis’ voice has some miles on it and is, perhaps, a little worse for wear. After his ... Read more...

What you missed during the Latin Grammy pre-show

At 2 p.m., three hours before the 10 Annual Latin Grammy Award’s live broadcast is set to begin, a crowd is pressed up against the barricades outside the Mandalay Bay Events Center waiting for the biggest names in Latin music to arrive. Decked out in suits, tuxedos, ball gowns and the occasional pair of jeans, the stars parade by to a chorus of cheers and camera flashes. I walk by, too. Instead of wearing sequins or rhinestones, I’m in a ... Read more...

Crowds and comfort at free Handsome Furs concert

Beauty Bar on a Tuesday night is rarely crowded, but last night’s Handsome Furs concert made me wonder what the maximum capacity for the outdoor patio is and if we had passed it. The downtown bar hosted the kick-off event for automotive specialty products convention SEMA, offering free entry and free PBR, enough to draw every hipster in the greater metropolitan if local favorites Afghan Raiders, Weekly editor-stalking No Age and the electro rock Montreal duo Handsome Furs weren’t enough. ... Rob Zombie, PDA and … German werewolf women?

The Halloween costumes at the Palms never disappoint. Throw in a rock concert on All Hallow’s Eve eve and the horror festival Fangoria Trinity of Terrors going on all weekend and you have the recipe for perfect people watching. Rob Zombie’s Saturday night show at The Pearl brought out a wide variety of costumed freaks and a few people who were downright getting freaky. When I walked into the floor area of The Pearl, a bright green creature jumped out ... Read more...
