Over time, you develop “cognitive dissonance”
I remember having a low opinion of strippers before I was a stripper. I felt sympathy for them with a healthy dose of judgment. I used to read a stripper’s blog on some blog Web site. I remember being horrified by the things she would say. She was just talking very casually about work and would say things like, “Work was bad. I did thirteen dances last night,” and I remember thinking how disgusting the thought was of coming in ... Read more...

Behind-the-scenes scenes best left untold
“Where does the sex happen?” I jokingly asked the owner of a club I will call StripMart while he gave me and my pretty friend, a non-stripper, a tour. It was less of a tour and more of a herding of chicks to a small, private party in a back room. I had been on the main floor for a party and I was off-duty. I was a mere spectator in civilian clothing when a man in a suit said, ... Read more...

Sometimes, we cross the finish line
Some men will “finish” while receiving lap dances. The first thought for the stripper who dances for these men is that she is grinding too hard or doing something that is otherwise “nasty.” This is not the case. There is definitely a different kind of guy who finishes at a strip club. I encounter the situation about once every three or four months. Normally, men who finish, finish fast. In my experience they are also older, which seems counterintuitive. I’d ... Read more...

Summer is not always a pretty picture
I stood on the balcony of my friend’s weekly apartment building near the airport on a breezy night last week. The view was of the pervy neighbor through his sheer drapes and the meth addicts scurrying about downstairs at the two story white brick buildings against the neon lights of the Strip. It occurred to me that I’m really impressed by this summer’s weather. I think it’s the mildest I’ve experienced in over eight years of living here. My father’s ... Read more...

Clown car never seems to be in idle
“My clothes are getting tight. I’m gaining weight,” a thin girl says in the locker room. “No way!” I assure her. She is thin. She has a body like a growing child with a raging metabolism. “I’m only workin’ two or three more months,” she says. “Where are you going?” I ask. “I’m pregnant,” she says in a lowered voice. I could barely hear her over the music. It was probably a Nickelback song. I hate Nickelback. The DJ at ... Read more...

From Mexico to Bangkok, strippers have it covered
Give me your huddled masses yearning to breathe cigar smoke. I think I haven’t encountered a higher concentration of immigrant workers anywhere than in strip clubs. Hell, even I’m foreign. I’m from a Latin American country that I won’t name because it would give up my anonymity to anyone that knows me at my regular haunts. I’ve only met one person in the U.S. from there, so I’m not comfortable sharing that information. I’ve lived in the U.S. for eight ... Read more...

Money-grubbin’ strippers: It’s nothing personal
Work is expensive. Exotic dancers in Las Vegas and in many other places generally pay to work. Few places pay an hourly wage. Workers generally pay what is called a “house fee” to the club every shift. I’ve paid between $35 to $90 per shift, plus tip-outs, just to work. We tip bouncers, DJ’s, bartenders, “house moms,” (a house mom is the lady in the locker room who provides odds and ends like safety pins, coffee and moral support) and ... Read more...

Dalliance with coke a bad idea
I haven’t really done coke since I was pregnant a few years ago. Don’t judge me. I’m not a bad parent. I killed the baby right away. Getting an abortion was the only logical decision. That is a story for another time. I’ve never been heavy into coke. I do it maybe twice a year when all the factors play out right. Or if I’m bored and it’s going around. I did it a little more while I was pregnant ... Read more...

No Cirque, but Soleil gives solid advice on overcharging
“There is no such thing as overcharging,” my friend at work tells me. You should always charge as much as you think a customer can afford. I had been in this thought-provoking situation the night before. We always recap the previous night’s events and tell each other about our lucky financial wins and weird stories. Or we just gossip. Or bitch. I digress. There is no such thing as overcharging. I know other girls agree. Many of them agree and ... Read more...

Darkened audition was no production number
I am getting the itch to test the waters of a new club. Inevitably, I always get the urge to change scenery after a few months at one location. This means I have to go through the process of auditions, which can range in the pain spectrum from completely humiliating walks of shame to just showing up and filling out the paperwork. The first time I ever auditioned to be a stripper, I was under 21 years of age. It ... Read more...

Job benefits include loose dress code, cultural studies
Sometimes, I’m pretty sure I have the best job in the world. I run around in my underwear with my friends and we drink ourselves into oblivion. I don’t wear much more clothing at home by myself than what I wear when I’m at work, and no one is paying me at home. I really only get dressed for the commute to and from work. The real world is a menace! Perhaps my last blog item hinted that I might ... Read more...
