‘Mom’ dies, and it is time to pretend as if it didn’t happen
“Are you speeding?” I asked the police officer in the front seat. I looked out the window from the back seat and noticed that we were flying by the other traffic on the freeway. I never speed. It felt dangerous. “Of course,” he answered. “That’s why I never write speeding tickets.” It would be hypocritical, he says. Well that’s nice. “So do you have a badge or something?” Of course he does. What a stupid question. He unbuckles his seatbelt ... Read more...

Mom is comatose, and yoga is not helping
It is about 7 p.m. on Friday. I’m beginning to get ready for work. I’m not even sure where I’ll work tonight. I’m doing a variety of scattered tasks. Pairing matching sets of eyelashes and thigh high stockings while doing laundry, among other things. The woman having sushi eaten off her nude body? She’s a friend

The party was hosted in a cluster of penthouse suites in one of the nicest hotels on the Strip. Security prevented uninvited people from passing beyond a certain point ... Read more...

No amount of bleach can cleanse these memories
One day in the early summer of a few years ago, around the time most people have dinner, I was at my high school sweetheart’s house by myself. I stood in the kitchen cleaning the glossy, white-tile countertops with bleach to kill time and bacteria while I waited for him to come home. I rubbed the ragged wet paper towel against the discolored grout, just wasting time. Someone forgot to turn off the little boxy TV in the kitchen and ... Read more...

Happy Nude Year! A night to reflect, and pay tribute to Lady Liberty
The light at the end of the tunnel marking the end of a long, slow season came in the form of fireworks on New Year’s Eve. It was a profitable night after a particularly rough season. I rang in the New Year at work onstage with several other dancers and finished the night with a bucket full of cash. I wore a cheap, glittery New Year’s Eve crown that had long white feathers sticking out of it. It was shaped ... Read more...
