Katy Perry Rocks Rok Vegas

When I hear Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” I think of the clichéd hot chick, make-out party that is apparently on men’s minds 23 out of 24 hours a day. The scene on the red carpet at the opening of Rok Vegas Saturday night was a tad bit different, as Katy planted one on the lips of her main girl –- her grandmother, Ann Hudson. In an outfit designed especially for the event, Katy towered over her tiny grandmother in sparkly green shoes, made to coordinate with her Vegas-themed dress and matching headband, which sported playing cards in the form of a royal flush. She gave the Playboy dealers a run for their money in the cute-but-appropriate headgear department. Katy walked the red –- rather, the pink -- carpet with a who’s who of young Hollywood, including her boyfriend, Travis McCoy, of the group Gym Class Heroes.
Other celebrities who came out for the bash included singer Haylie Duff, Nick Zano, Prom Night stars Brittany Snow and Jessica Stroup; Jenna Dewan and boyfriend Channing Tatum; One Tree Hill actor Michael Copon; Desperate Housewives actor Josh Henderson; John Wilkes, from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus; Sean Huze and Jamie Chung from MTV’s The Real World: San Diego.

Katy took the stage with her dapperly dressed band, sporting suits decorated with hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds to match her dress. It didn’t take long before she realized her “motherf***** Dorothy shoes” inhibited her onstage movement and she quickly shed them in favor of the freedom of stocking-clad feet.
Katy played a number of songs off of her album One of the Boys, which seemed to be the soundtrack of a young girl’s typically turbulent love life. The tune “Waking Up In Vegas” amused the crowd as they contemplated the next day’s imminent hangover. Katy ended the show with her anthem of the summer, “I Kissed a Girl,” to an eruption from the crowd, which sang along to every word. The second Katy left the stage, the Rok DJs started pulsing Kanye and flashing the strobe lights as satisfied fans rushed the exits, eager to escape after hearing the much-anticipated song. Unfortunately for them, the club blocked both exits as one was reserved for entering guests and the other was being used for load-out of the band’s equipment. The pleasure of Katy’s concert was overshadowed by the trapped feeling as claustrophobia set in. Once free from the club, fans were able to reflect on the high-energy show from one of the hottest singers today.
Too bad I forgot my cherry ChapStick.
