Thank your lucky caramel swirls: It’s free cone day!
When I was in college and just had one of those days, I would treat myself to a half pint of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream – that frozen ode to the jam band made with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow, caramel swirls and fish-shaped fudge. The only downside was the “freshman 15” beginning to creep up on me after one too many bad days.
But one small cone won’t derail your diet, and it’d be a downright shame not to take advantage of “Free Cone Day” tomorrow, when complimentary small cones in every flavor will be handed out by local celebrities from noon to 8 p.m. at the Ben & Jerry shops at the Galleria Mall (upper level, across from the food court) and at The District at Green Valley Ranch.
The lineup of guest scoopers at the Galleria is aimed at the kids - 51s mascot Cosmo, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Magician David Darkstone. The District caters to adult tastes, with cast members from Thunder from Down Under and Fantasy, comedian Louis Anderson and BMX rider Ricardo Laguna all dishing out what’s arguably Vermont’s finest export.
The cones are free of charge, but donations are requested to benefit Lied Discovery Children’s Museum and the Nevada Community Learning Centers (formerly Classroom on Wheels).
Since today takes us into the 90 degrees, the free ice cream should taste that much better. The only hard part will be deciding which flavor to choose. You can check out the many tempting creations online and start salivating now, or just take my word for it and order up the Phish Food. You won’t regret it.
