Calling all filmmakers: CineVegas 2009 deadline approaching

It’s time for your 15 minutes of fame. Better yet, why not shoot for six days of fame? Las Vegas’ own CineVegas Film Festival brings a taste of Sundance and Cannes to the desert every summer for a week or so of parties, films and discussions featuring movie industry up and comers and big shots alike. The deadline is fast approaching to submit film entries for the 2009 festival, running this summer from June 10-15: All submissions must be in ... Read more...

Even Vegas can’t save Top Chef finale

Since Gene Villiatora got booted from Top Chef: New York in episode seven for an overcooked and underwhelming red snapper, something has been missing for me. Maybe it was lacking from the first shot of the cheftestants chopping apples in the Big Apple – Season 5 hasn’t kept me as riveted or left me as hungry as previous seasons – or maybe it was losing the home team factor that sent my attention spinning. Either way, my relationship with the ... Read more...

French toast + sausage = a winning start for Scale the Strat

Two pieces of French toast and a piece of sausage. That was the winner’s “breakfast of champions” at the two-day Scale the Strat stair-climbing competition last weekend. Zach Schade from Tumwater, Wash. climbed 854 feet, 108 stories, 1,455 stairs in seven minutes and 32 seconds to win the charity climb. “I’m probably not into nutrition as much as I could (be),” said the 41-year-old Strat winner on his hearty breakfast. “I try to eat pretty well, but I don’t get ... At a Legends parade, who drives the golf cart? Elvis, of course

Elvis drove the golf cart, and Madonna sat shotgun. In the back seat, two showgirls smiled widely, decked out in black feathers and lots of sparkles. Behind them, Dolly Parton teetered under the weight of her breasts. Britney strode in spandex and pre-nervous breakdown blonde locks. Garth Brooks strummed his guitar. The odd Vegas family that makes up Legends in Concert poured out of the Imperial Palace and onto the Strip sidewalk, waving like dignitaries as they headed north to ... Read more...

Sunday: Head to the hills for Winter Rx Games

This Sunday drag your ass out of bed and watch local athletes in really baggy pants do what they do best: rip it up on the slopes. Pharmacy Boardshop’s Winter Rx Games snowboard competition is heading back to Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort for its second year and inviting local snow fiends to come test their chops on rails, boxes and other obstacles erected at the bottom of the hill. Local boarders and representatives from snowboard companies will judge ... Read more...

Drink the Kool-Aid with Craig Ferguson

I don’t know what it is about Scottish expats, but they’re a funny bunch. Granted, my experience with Scotsmen is basically limited to the immigrant doctor who would often prescribe me “a wee bit ‘o penicillin” as a child, the alcoholic landlord I endured while living in Australia a few years ago and “Late Late Show” host Craig Ferguson, who returned to Vegas for an eight-night stand at the MGM Grand last night. While each of them is funny, they ... Read more...

When clothes speak volumes: Designers with a message come to Vegas

At Las Vegas’ fashion conference week, everyone comes with an agenda: To buy, to sell, to promote and to get noticed. But some designers and companies came with a greater mission — one they hope betters the world and sends a message. At a collective of women in West Africa, Kate Dwyer found her inspiration. The women, who were being taught how to dye and sell traditional batik cloths, would later move Dwyer to begin her company, FairTribe. “It was ... Read more...

Where are my shorts?

Every year I make an earnest if not terribly motivated attempt to see the movies up the year’s Oscars in the big-ticket conversation-starter categories. People have seen these films, I figure, and liked them well enough, too. The short films, however, are a different story entirely. Lavatory – Lovestory, nominated for best short animated film, rings no bells. Could it be an animated tale of former senator Larry Craig’s restroom foibles? A musical number staring Sheila the dancing plunger? Who ... Read more...

Common and Microsoft - an unlikely fashion design duo

As a Grammy-winning rapper, actor, activist and part-time ad model, it seems like Common has a lot on his plate these days. But in December, the artist added clothing designer to his list of talents. Common has teamed up with Microsoft’s T-shirt line, Softwear, to design vintage-inspired tees that tap into the nostalgia of the earliest computers and show how the marriage of hip-hop and technology has changed the entertainment industry. His four new designs in the Softwear line premiered ... Read more...

Brad Pitt enjoys PG-rated Vegas trip

After first being spotted at the Hard Rock Hotel, Brad Pitt was seen at the MGM Grand on Wednesday as he continued what appeared to be a boys’ night out. Instead of gazing at the girls at Crazy Horse Paris or taking shots of Patron at Studio 54, however, the 45-year-old star was spotted with adopted sons Maddox, 7, and Pax, 5, in the front row of Cirque du Soleil’s Asian-inspired showcase, KÀ. At MAGIC, even a slip of the nip is stylish

Surrounded by booths hawking tribal patterned silk dresses, printed cotton tops and form-fitting blouses, Greg Blanc is selling stickers at MAGIC Marketplace 2009. But not just any old adhesive; Blanc’s wares aren’t scratch ‘n’ sniff, bumper blazers or those icky oily patches. Made by Venice, Calif.-based Bristols 6, these stickers are specially made to ride on skin and cover up a pesky patch of darkened flesh that ladies loath to show. These are Nippies. Flamingo serves it up spicy with X Burlesque

Variety is the spice of life at the Flamingo, and what a spicy life it is for X Burlesque. The routines in the adult production, which celebrated its second anniversary last week, are as varied as the showgirls it showcases. The 90-minute set has something for everyone: blondes, brunettes; perky A-cups, curvaceous C-cups; thick thighs, thin thighs, real boobs, fake boobs. If you like women and like to see them shake what their mothers (or surgeons) gave them, you will ... Read more...

It’s moments before midnight and as Valentine’s approaches, the lobby of A Little White Wedding Chapel is hopping. If the shoe fits: Wishing for bare feet at the footwear convention

A tall, debonair, dark-haired man in a pinstripe suit with a pink handkerchief peeking from his front pocket and a tall blonde fashionista by his side, is speaking to a cluster of eager young women. He is talking about the ballerina and the gladiator, two shoe styles he is famous for, and then says something about how Steve Madden copied him. Amid blemishes and bargains, S.I. models show human side

Last Night’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue party at LAX helped state the obvious: Swimsuit models are ridiculously hot. It also shed some light on a little-known fact about models: They are people, too. Model Brooklyn Decker attempted to speak Spanish with the reporter from Univision. When asked if she spoke Spanish, Decker responded, “Un poco,” indicating she knew a little. She answered the next question of where she learned Spanish by saying, “In eschoolo.” I think she was probably going ... Read more...

Inking Obama

Lying on his back, shirtless, with legs crossed and an arm folded under his head, Chris Sinceno’s face registers nothing. The New York Yankees logo tattooed onto his chest above a long, jutting scar rises and falls in a steady rhythm. Further down on his stomach, an inky scorpion (his first piece, tattooed in New York at age 16 or 17) moves to the same gentle beat. His eyes are closed, his mouth creased in ambivalence. If it weren’t for ... Read more...

A (brief) tale of two champions

Flipping through channels last night in the odd spot between 10 p.m.’s leftovers and 11 p.m.’s starting credits, a pair of sporting events caught my attention. First up was the 133rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, a tradition I have never entirely understood. The way I see it, a bunch of prissy pups lope around for a moment then strike their best pose. My former dog, a shelter mutt by the name of Lucky, used to do much the same ... Read more...

Not that we’re bitter or anything…

Because a traditional candlelight dinner reminds us of all those years of loneliness, here’s heads up on a few awesome and angst-free ways for couples and singletons to spend the impending holiday. Party Like it’s 2007: Pre-recession, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag were just harmlessly annoying media hogs. Crüe closes the Joint, minus the mayhem

When Mötley Crüe played the final pre-renovation concert at the Aladdin in 1997, they tore up the stage, fans literally tore up the theater, a small-scale riot broke out and four people were hurt. It was mayhem. When they played the final concert the Joint last night, however, the older, wiser and more subdued Crüe behaved themselves. It wasn’t mayhem, but it was still fun. “Pass that shit back, I see some thirsty f***ers in the back!” drummer Tommy Lee ... Read more...

It’s been a rough week

It’s been a rough week: First off, I’ve been sick. Secondly, as I slept through the Super Bowl, my best friend from high school gave birth to a baby girl – talk about a reality check. Twenty-four hours later and still running a fever, my boyfriend and I broke up and I became increasingly convinced the whole marriage thing just isn’t going to happen to me. Then, the next day, I grew another year older. It’s becoming obvious that I’m ... Read more...

Valentine’s Day dates that don’t suck

If you’re not properly prepared, Valentine’s Day can go from celebration of love to nuclear relationship explosion quicker than you can say, “Another chocolate truffle, darling?” Roses are dangerous. Candlelit dinners pose a serious fire hazard. Chocolates will only inflate your waistline, and canned Hallmark sentiments are as likely to garner rolled eyes as a rosy swoon. This year, skip the trite February 14 staples and go for a date that doesn’t suck. Here, in no particular order, are Weekly’s ... Read more...

Paula Poundstone, comedian and pet enthusiast, has three kids, ten cats, a dog, a bearded dragon lizard, a bunny, and, oh yes, a sense of humor.
