Movember means cash for your ‘stache
Shaving is overrated. Just ask the 40-plus gentlemen who gathered Friday night at the Silverton to compete for the title of Mr. ’Stache 2010. The competition served as the main attraction at the casino-lodge’s inaugural Mustachio Bashio, a Movember event to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Celebrated internationally, the month of Movember encourages people to put down the razor for 30 days. Walking in, I immediately noticed that this was no normal night at the Silverton. Mustached ... This was a very bad idea
Every once in a while, I do something stupid. It wasn’t so long ago that I danced on the bar at Hennessey’s to raise money for Haiti. Of course, I couldn’t just dance on the bar. I did it wearing a small pink tank top with the Pretty Kitty Brazilian waxing salon logo on it. Given that I am 260 pounds, this was somewhat like putting a Barbie T-shirt on a gorilla. Everyone has that friend that they can convince ... Read more...

We know when it’s real: Reviewing Wendy’s new burger
Dave Thomas, the gentle old man from all those old Wendy’s commercials, always described his classic hamburgers as “hot and juicy.” Were they hot? Yeah, most of the time. Were they juicy? Ehh. The whole “our-burgers-are-square” novelty is neat, but at the end of the day Wendy’s beef patties always had a rubbery texture and lacked in the value department. But it seems that Wendy Thomas, Dave’s daughter, has decided to alter the original recipe and change the name to ... Read more...

Ranking the holiness of Sin City
Men’s Health magazine continues its mission to rank major US cities in any and all ways they can think of, regardless of how interesting, relevant or scientifically accurate. They have already named us the 11th drunkest city, as well as the 70th most sexually active city—two findings I would argue contradict one another. Then again, I’m a horny drunk. Anyway … This month the magazine looks at holiness—as in the number of many places of worship per capita, religious organizations, ... Read more...

Las Vegas needs Random Acts of Culture
Sometimes it seems like all the cool stuff happens in other cities—and this blog entry is not going to argue otherwise. Actually, it might make you wish you lived in Macon, Georgia or Akron, Ohio. Those are two of eight cities selected as venues for the Random Acts of Culture series, funded by the Knight Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to the advancement of journalism. (Charlotte, Detroit, Miami, Philadelphia, San Jose and St. Paul are the others.) The series strives to ... Read more...

Tony Hawk inspires from high above the Wynn pool
I like to think I’m not easily impressed. It takes something pretty incredible to drop my jaw and leave me wide-eyed and gaping, but this past Saturday, I was awed by something that usually doesn’t leave me gaga: skateboarding. Here’s the thing about action sports like skateboarding: From far away, and through a TV set is pretty far, they don’t look that hard. In order to complete the spins, twists, kicks and grabs that make up modern vert skating, and ... Read more...

Family-friendly ‘Burlesque’ competition proves Vegas knows sexy
Holding a nationwide dance competition to promote upcoming movie Burlesque (out Thanksgiving weekend, starring Christina Aguilera and Cher) is pretty “duh!” marketing, but it’s yielded noteworthy results. Namely, that out of the 20 finalists (one from each city in which competitions were held) only one dancer’s performance was actually burlesque. One guess where she’s from. Yes, Vegas finalist Anna N. kept the competition sexy, forgoing pirouettes and ballet slippers for sexy strutting and tease. It’s the most PG striptease you’ll ... Read more...
