DJ Abec considers himself raised by hip hop on the urban streets of New York. His headphones and the music that filled them offered a break from the troubles in his life - an abusive childhood, Catholic school altar boy drug use and the crippling losses of friends and family members. "My sketchbooks were my diaries," he writes, "and my turntables have been the love of my life. My rhyme book is my bible, and the breeze from the boombox dried my tear-soaked pillow sheets." While he admits he's still a starving artist, DJ Abec says it's a small price to pay for doing something he loves. "The sky is the limit," he explains. "I was never firmly planted in the ground."
