The son of a nomadic family of innovative musicians, artists, actors and filmmakers, Phillip Matos a.k.a. Mestizosix9/Mezzi has grown up around music his entire life. The Oakland, Calif. native had a first taste of global success at the young age of 16 with his notorious speed metal/punk/alternative/rock outfits Wehrmacht and Spazztic Blurr. When both bands folded in 1991 Mezzi immersed himself heavily in dance music culture, exploring the realm of being a professional DJ and remix artist.

Compared to his early days of metal, punk and hip-hop, Matos has grown immensely as a multi-faceted vocalist. From rock to spoken word, alternative to new wave, punk and metal, emo to trip-hop, pop, funk, jazz and soul, he's had all the proper inspiration to manifest a one of a kind vocal talent and songwriting ability. These characteristics can be traced to his legendary father, Tony Matos, a bandleader, session player, jazz musician, songwriter and composer of Puerto Rican descent. Tony was one of the first students to graduate from the Berklee College Of Music, and until he passed away in '99,Tony frequently tutored his son on the fundamentals of melody, harmony, percussion, pitch and culture in today's competitive musical society.

Real name
Phillip Matos
Name orgins
69 is the symbol of Cancer; I am a Cancerian...tribute to ancestry, my mother and father. Mestizo is a Latin word for a person of mixed blood. I'm half Puerto Rican and a mixture of Scandinavian, French and Welsh, but it is also a reference to mixing music, creating a 'mixed blood' of music. My name used to just be Mestizo--I coined the name in '93, but didn't trademark it and an underground rapper, a Latin jazz group from L.A. and another one from Chile all call themselves Mestizo so I added six9 and made it all one word. People call me Mezzi for short. I'm all about being as original as possible.
