“I’m completely supportive of the Onyx,” Beane says after a rehearsal of his upcoming version of Shakespeare’s Henry V. “It will continue to be a great venue. But Insurgo has gradually grown as well. Given the long-term goals of Insurgo, I want to keep a progression going, and it seemed like the right time to make that happen and focus 100 percent on Insurgo.”
Beane signed on as manager of the Onyx approximately a year and a half ago, when Michael Morse, owner of the Rack, opened the theater in the back of his fetish-wear shop. Since then it has become practically a one-stop shop for alternative theater in a town that doesn’t always reward such ventures.
Morse will take over running the theater and booking shows in the space. Beane is confident experimental theatre will continue there.
