Three reasons to check out Fabulous
Thu, Oct 30, 2008 (midnight)
A rave in the Orleans Arena. Sounds … interesting. Strange as the setting might seem, however, the lineup for the Fabulous festival ought to excite any serious fan of electronic dance music, bringing together highly touted DJs and acclaimed live acts under one roof for an all-night (and morning) bash. Three that stand out to us:
1. Deadmau5. Aka Toronto progressive house maniac Joel Zimmerman, who dons a giant red mouse head for his singular live performances. Dial up a bit of his set from March’s Ultra Music Festival at Youtube.com/watch?v=icl4qGvil1E.

2. The Ed Banger party. Justice isn’t scheduled to be there, but most of the red-hot French label’s best-known names will be, including Busy P, Mehdi, So Me, Sebastian and Mr Flash. If you witnessed Beauty Bar’s Banger DJ set after last year’s VMAs, you already know this electro mayhem is not to be missed.
3. Crystal Castles. Canadians Ethan Kath and Alice Glass took their band name from an Atari game, and their devotion to 8-bit emulation is clear from even a quick skim through the tunes at Myspace.com/crystalcastles. But the Castles aren’t all about gimmickry; Glass’ voice is quite cool, and the pair’s melodies are darn catchy (try “Untrust Us,” for example).
