Postcards from the edge

Image

When you think of Oregon, what comes to mind? No doubt lots of trees and lots of rain. But in illustrating her state for the upcoming National Invitational Postcard Exhibit, artist Betsy Walton came up with a rather striking image titled “Our Lady of the Rain,” featuring a tranquil woman in a transparent shawl, sitting under a tree while rain envelops her. It indeed says “Oregon,” but in a most unique and creative way.

Calendar

National Invitational Postcard Exhibit
April 24-July 2, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., free.
Bridge Gallery at Las Vegas City Hall

Forty-nine other artists have also interpreted their respective states as postcard images, and their work, along with Walton’s, will be on display starting April 24 at the Bridge Gallery in Las Vegas City Hall. Odds are you’ll find this an eye-opening show, with some of the works displaying landmarks and symbols, while others tackle issues facing the states they represent. It’ll certainly make you reassess your opinion of the postcard, which in the era of instant messaging has certainly fallen by the wayside. One thing’s for sure—an e-mail never looked this good.
