A shaky experience

This week, Galaxy Theatres at the Cannery becomes the sixth outlet for D-Box Technologies’ Motion Code seats, the latest gimmick aimed at getting people to leave their living rooms and head to the multiplex. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the first movie to showcase the technology in Vegas, with about 25 minutes of the 153-minute film utilizing chairs that move and vibrate along with onscreen action. One Galaxy auditorium has been retrofitted with 22 motion seats, tickets for which cost $8 over Galaxy’s base price (so an evening weekend showing will run $18.25).

A preview last week demonstrated the technology via the first 20 minutes of Fast & Furious, with its bravura opening gas-tanker hijacking that very much lends itself to Motion Code. A foot chase a few minutes later was less impressive. For now, the experience is an uncomfortable middle ground between traditional moviegoing and motion-simulator rides, unlikely to completely satisfy fans of either.
