- Vegas paper gets subpoena to ID online commenters (06/16/09)
It is with the greatest interest that we’ve followed the saga of the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s handling of a federal subpoena seeking to identify people who posted inflammatory comments on a tax evasion trial story on the R-J’s website. Here’s our suggestion: Protect the idiots. Yes, unfortunately, any moron can post a comment on any website, but the appropriate action is to ban them from future comment. What you don’t do is name names. It’s part of the free-speech bargain, folks: You get the good with the bad, with a little insane mixed in.
