Take a bow, mass media. According to Heather Siegel, owner of Las Vegas-based retail complex HalloweenMart.com, today’s movies, TV, books and the blogosphere have clearly informed the public’s costume choices with all of HalloweenMart’s top five best-selling costumes coming from the greater media sphere. “Pop-culture icons and Hollywood are having a big impact on Halloween costumes this year,” says Siegel. Those top sellers include sexy Bollywood saris right out of Slumdog Millionaire; zombies who wandered off the set of Zombieland; scores of Hefs and Girls Next Door; and legions of Michael Jacksons from every era of his august career. But the most obvious trend—just ask any 12-year old—is America’s obsession with eternal life thanks to the attractive, modern bloodsuckers of Twilight, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. What ever happened to Frankenstein’s Monster? The Mummy? Elvira??
