On the Weekly’s mail page this issue (page 11), a local Downtownie insists his neighborhood “is as close as we are going to get to San Fran.” As it happens, Vegas closes that gap a little this week with a Downtown show by Sister Spit, a Bay Area queer performance-poetry troupe. They are invariably described as “raucous.” “In-your-face.” “Hilarious.” Several of those words—most often “hilarious” and “face”—have also been applied to local poet, lawyer and alt-culture impresario Dayvid Figler, in whose backyard the Sisters will Spit.
Calendar
- Sister Spit
- Oct. 4, 6 to 9 p.m., $10
- Figler’s Magical Backyard
- All Ages
Headlining the show are SS co-founder Michelle Tea and Beth Lisick, author of Everybody Into the Pool and Helping Me Help Myself: One Skeptic, 10 Self-Help Gurus and a Year on the Brink of the Comfort Zone. Other performers include slam poet Kirya Traber and former The L Word staff writer Ariel Schrag. Figler calls it “an eclectic assemblage of top-shelf San Franciscan literary and performance folk, most of whom have a deep love and curiosity about Las Vegas that goes beyond the obvious.”
