Let the chips fly!

MGM Mirage is discontinuing $5 chips with images of two of its most iconic acts: Siegfried & Roy and Danny Gans. Through July 23, you can redeem these chips for their full value, after which they will no longer be accepted as currency. But if you have one, don’t hold onto it expecting this to increase its value. According to Jim Steffner, national chairman of the Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collector’s Club, casinos decommission chips occasionally when their subject matter is no longer a part of the fabric of Las Vegas—but that rarely has an effect on value. Which is why we’d recommend getting rid of the following chips as well: 1) “Five neighborhoods where your home has quadrupled in value” series; 2) “Yucca Mountain” glow-in-the-dark chip; 3) John Ensign “Ethics in Government” limited edition; 4) “UNLV: Now and Forever” collector’s set; and the “See You Next Year” Vegoose chip.
