See a movie, save the Earth

Saving the Earth can be difficult and time-consuming, but watching movies about saving the Earth is much easier and more entertaining. If your idea of a good way to spend Earth Day (April 22) is more sitting in a darkened room eating popcorn than standing outside picking up trash, check out the Earth Week Film Festival, a program of environmentally themed documentaries screened at the Springs Preserve and UNLV.

Selections include The Cove (April 22 at 6:30 p.m. at UNLV), which won this year's Oscar for Best Documentary, and focuses on the efforts of a group of environmentalists to stop the wholesale slaughter of dolphins in Japan. Oscar nominee Food, Inc., about the corporatization of food in America, will also be part of the festival, along with films about organic produce, the dangers of overfishing, the cost of the world's reliance on plastics and other important social and environmental issues. And once you've taken in a couple of those well-made, convincing films, you may just feel motivated to get out and do your part to save the Earth after all.
